"In a world that is increasingly loud and self-focused, being the person who 'sets the screen' is a superpower. It’s easy to be the person with the ball; it’s much harder, and much more rewarding, to be the person who creates the space for someone else to score. Whether you end up in the halls of government, a high-tech lab, or a neighborhood nonprofit, remember that your degree isn't a crown to be worn—it’s a tool to be used in the service of others." Justice Musser grew up in Damascus, a small town in Southwest Virginia with a population of approximately 780 residents. Known as “Trail Town USA” for its Seven Trails, Damascus is home to the well-known "Creeper Trail." In 2018, Justice moved to Bristol, Tennessee, where he attended Tennessee High School and played on the football team. He was then recruited to play for Princeton Football. While Justice was attending Princeton, his hometown endured devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in September 2022. "Seeing bridges being wiped out, the trail being erased from the side of the mountains, it was honestly heartbreaking,” he said. In July 2025, Justice founded The Ironwood Foundation with the goal of rebuilding the Creeper Trail and revitalizing Appalachia. His passion for his hometown region is deeply ingrained. "Coal miners are in my family and this theme of being resilient, this theme of hard work and having a strong work ethic runs deep within our veins. [My great-grandmother’s] strength and her positivity was something that I will always carry with me throughout my life, and I think that sort of ties back into my love for the area." Justice graduated from Princeton in 2026 with a bachelor of arts in anthropology and a minor in entrepreneurship. He currently attends Indiana State University with plans to attend law school and eventually move back to the Appalachia region to continue to give back to his community. Princeton University, chartered in 1746, has played a significant role in the founding of our nation and the Garden State. Nassau Hall was the site of the state legislature’s inaugural meeting on Aug. 27, 1776, where its members elected the state’s first governor, William Livingston, and convened on campus through November. The legislature officially moved its chambers to Trenton’s State House when the city became the permanent state capital in 1790. Read the full story: #NationalNewJerseyDay

"Princeton is life changing. It became this dream and this opportunity to expand my world." Alyssa Lloyd '26 shares her journey of growing up in a farming town of 650 people in eastern Washington to attending Princeton where service was central to her education. A recent graduate and Princeton School of Public & International Affairs major, Alyssa is supporting youth who are exiting foster care in Seattle as they pursue early career opportunities. She plans to develop an employment guide for young adults and staff at Friends of Youth, a nonprofit in King County, Washington. This work bridges the focus of her senior thesis, which explored how to develop an apprenticeship program for young adults aging out of the foster care system. Princeton researchers have cleared a major hurdle toward the advent of practical quantum computing by developing a new kind of superconducting qubit that improves quantum coherence time by 15 times that of industry standards. The new qubit design is similar to those already used by leading companies like Google and IBM, and could easily be slotted into existing processors, according to the researchers. The importance of deep reading and critical thinking as our brains adapt to digital distractions and information overload is the subject of this year’s Princeton Pre-read book, “Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World” by Maryanne Wolf. The Pre-read is a Princeton tradition started by President Eisgruber, who introduces first-year students to intellectual life on campus by selecting a book to read and discuss together. "'Reader, Come Home' addresses beautifully and persuasively what may be the single most important question for incoming students at Princeton University, why should we continue to read long, demanding books when short summaries are easily obtained?" Read more on why President Eisgruber selected this year's Pre-read:
