Since 2014, the ISIS Prisons Museum has undertaken a meticulous process of documenting the mass graves left behind by ISIS following the Shaitat massacre in rural Deir ez-Zor.This documentation is based on survivor testimonies, accounts from victims' families, and visual materials that chronicle one of the largest mass killings in Syria. In parallel, the museum has developed an extensive database identifying grave sites discovered between 2014 and 2020, while gathering data on the victims and their identities. Despite the passage of time and the accumulation of archived materials, the need remains urgent to continue the research and expand efforts to protect these sites—many of which may still hold crucial evidence concerning this atrocity

In 2017, ISIS arrested Ahmad Abdelqader Rajab at his home in Mosul. He spent 35 days in the Meydan House Prison, which was run by the group’s Hisba Diwan (morality police). During a visit to the torture room, Ahmad recalls how guards once left him hanging from the ceiling from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. By morning, he was forced to confess to crimes he hadn’t committed. A judge sentenced him to the burning of his car, 300 public lashes, and a heavy fine. His testimony is one of many documented by the ISIS Prisons Museum as part of a broader investigation into the Hisba Diwan. These testimonies, along with original documents and field research, reveal how the Hisba Diwan controlled even the smallest details of daily life.
