Still no sign of recurrence of my glioblastoma on the latest MRI scan. I couldn’t be happier!! It’s 18 months today since my brain tumour came to light. Thank you to all those who have been part of the medical & scientific teams involved in my treatment and care and scientific analysis of my tumour. This week, I’ll be having another MRI brain scan looking for any evidence of recurrence of my brain cancer (as well as for treatment side effects and stability of my cerebral artery aneurysm). Despite a busy and incredibly fun week at the Australian of the Year events, I am as nervous as ever! So called scanxiety lives on! Thanks everyone for your support and kindness. Here is an update about my health and some info about a fun event to participate in, happening next month: As many of you will know, Tour de Cure is an organisation very close to my heart. On Sunday 9th November they will be hosting their inaugural Step Out for Cancer event in Sydney. This event is in support of the new Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre and, as well as raising vital funds, it’s also about celebrating the opening of a world class facility that will help save the lives of children with cancer. The event has a 6km family-friendly walk, going pitch side and behind-the-scenes at Allianz Stadium and the SCG; and 5km & 10km run options housed at Randwick Racecourse with exclusive access to areas closed to the public on race day. Your favourite teams - Sydney FC, Sydney Sixers, GWS Giants, Roosters and Rabbitohs – will be activating along the route and there will be a post event finale with music from Furnace and the Fundamentals and The Voice finalists, as well as entertainment for the kids. For more details and to register you can go to - Step Out For Cancer (find the link in my bio) – I hope to see you there on the day. @tourdecureaus

Next brain MRI scan this Friday looking 4 recurrent #glioblastoma &/or treatment effects. I don’t think high risk of major change yet but as scan creeps up closer I’m a little anxious. I understand this common in cancer patients (“scanxiety”). Here’s my take & experience to date!

How am I travelling? Pretty well. A few minor medical hiccups but nothing too serious. Recent challenges: antiepileptics, prolonged URTI/cough, viscid mucus secretions, semi-blocked ears & dry skin the main ones together with some lack of energy. Some minor abnormalities in blood tests. I have a great team of specialists looking after all aspects of my care! Thank you all and your wider teams very much for all the support & assistance you are giving me to fight this wretched supposedly incurable brain cancer #glioblastoma with world 1st #neoadjuvant combination #immunotherapy & a personalised anticancer vaccine led by Professor Georgina Long AO (Bluesky @gvlongphdmd). Professor Georgina Long AO (Bluesky @gvlongphdmd) & I look forward to seeing many people at Melanoma March at Iron Cove Bay in Sydney this Sunday at 7am to either run/jog the 7k Bay Run or walk 4K. My Dad’s 90th birthday was not only a wonderful celebration of him & his life, especially with our very special mum Jenny, but also provided me with a chance to say thank you both to him & Mum and all my very close extended family and friends. My Dad was one of 10 brothers & sisters who grew up on a country farm in Bridgenorth (which until very recently, Jim Finlay & I still often rode our bikes past) and then when they grew up to adults mostly lived within a few kilometres of each other in outer Launceston. I have great memories of my time as a child especially the fun, learning and friendships I had with an amazing group of family & friends. Soon after being Head Prefects in partnership with my very close cousin and one of my best friends Maree (Apted) at the local Riverside High School, when I was 18yo I left town to go to the University of Tasmania in Hobart to study medicine. Whilst this move has provided me with many opportunities to contribute in medicine and to people around the world, I don’t reckon I could have done this in the same successful way if not for the incredible first 18 years of my life. We were a very close large family and enjoyed amazing activities. This ensured great fun, friendships, working as a brilliant team and valuing everyone’s contributions that ultimately lead to greater fun & success! Thank you dear Scolyer family, I could not have had such a fun & successful life it it wasn’t for you all!!! Thank you! (PS. There are plenty of pictures of me and my cousins back in the older days in previous posts.) Allen & Unwin Garry Maddox Sydney Local Health District University of Tasmania #Brainstorm #glioblastoma
