Meet Owen! 🦭 Our second-ever sea lion pup arrived on June 1, and he’s already making a splash behind the scenes. Owen is thriving alongside mom Eloise. He’s nursing, growing stronger every day, finding his voice, and getting to know his animal care team. 💙

Baby howls! The six-week-old Red Wolf pups are starting to find their voices. The litter includes six males and three females, and is the latest success in recovering this critically endangered species. The Red Wolf family will remain behind the scenes at our offsite facility.

There’s a prickly new arrival at the Zoo! 🦔 For the first time in our 121-year history, a tiny prehensile-tailed porcupette was born to parents Nigel and Quillow. For now, the one-pound porcupette will remain behind the scenes with its first-time parents at Wild Wonders.

Exciting news! We’re thrilled to announce that tapir Yuna gave birth to a rare and endangered Malayan tapir calf Sunday night. The newborn, covered in distinctive white spots and stripes resembling a fuzzy walking watermelon, is only the second tapir born in our 120-year history.

Zookeepers are fostering positive interactions with baby Ume by gently giving her scratches and associating specific body parts with verbal cues. This training helps the endangered tapir become comfortable with human touch, ensuring stress-free care in the future. 📹: Assistant curator Erin

Move over, World Cup stars, Hudson is ready for kickoff! ⚽ Our male muskox is showing off some seriously powerful soccer skills as he headbutts and chases a massive soccer ball around. Enrichment plays an important role in animal care by encouraging natural behaviors.

The adorable tapir calf is already mastering the art of wiggling its tiny trunk. 🥰 Baby tapirs use their tiny trunks for sniffing, exploring, and even grasping small objects. Their trunks are an extended upper lip and nose, which helps them sense their surroundings and forage.

Growing takes a lot of energy, and endangered tapir, Ume, is making the most of today’s National Napping Day by catching some extra Z’s! 💤

The nine critically endangered American Red Wolf pups, born at our offsite facility on April 18, meeting their dad Fiddle. Both mom and dad Red Wolf parents share responsibility for raising the pups. The pups will remain behind the scenes at our off-site Red Wolf facility. 🐾

Clara the rescued sea otter is showing off her super-fast tippy-tappies! Those speedy paws aren’t just adorable, they’re a natural skill sea otters use to crack open hard-shelled snacks like clams and crabs using rocks as tools. Smart, speedy, and seriously cute! #WorldOtterDay
