Cohere, a Canadian AI company, received $240M in taxpayer funding. Much of it reportedly went to a data centre built and operated by a U.S. firm. Now, Cohere is reportedly in talks to merge with a German company. I asked if they’re committed to remaining Canadian-controlled. Their response was not definitive. Did the Liberals include sovereignty guarantees in the $240M contract?

Steven Guilbeault: "we still have an industrial price on pollution… We still have clean fuel standards... We still have (strict emissions) targets for vehicles.“ A pertinent reminder from the former environment minister that despite the bluster, all of these de-facto taxes remain—and continue to drive up the cost of essentials for Canadians.

“To sell a tool to China, impossible. To sell a tool to India, impossible. To sell a tool to Europe, highly unlikely.” Manufacturers won’t survive without a long-term agreement with the U.S. Mr. Carney’s pivot to China cannot rescue our industries in crisis.

“I DON’T NEED TO BE HERE.” That’s what Minister Joly said when Conservatives demanded answers for laid-off Canadian autoworkers. While 3,000 jobs hang in the balance and billions in taxpayer dollars are at stake, she doesn’t think accountability is worth her time.

The Liberal EV strategy has been a disaster. Nexstar EV battery facility: unfulfilled Honda EV expansion: suspended Ford EV plant: pivoted to gas powered trucks Northvolt: bankrupt Stellantis’s Brampton plant: 3,000 layoffs Billions in taxpayer dollars committed, and still companies are backing away from this Liberal pipe dream. How can the finance minister stand behind this effort?

The 49,000 Chinese EVs the Liberals will allow into Canada present serious national security, economic, and forced labour concerns. The Liberal government’s own surtax order in 2024 that imposed 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs stated exactly that. Min. Joly herself issued that order. Today, I asked her how she reconciles that.

Mr. Carney continues to break his promise to Canadians. 1 year later and no deal in sight. Meanwhile, Canada is losing thousands of manufacturing jobs. Impacted industries need certainty. The loans announced today are a band-aid over a gaping wound. My response:

In response to this, Conservatives introduced a very simple motion that read: “That the committee unequivocally condemn forced labour practices in China.” The Liberals responded by attempting to replace “in China” with “globally.” When asked to demonstrate the most basic concern for China’s human rights record, Liberals cannot bring themselves to do it.

Industry Minister Joly made several false and misleading claims tonight on Power and Politics—some so fanciful that you couldn’t make them up. When asked by the CBC if the deal signed with Germany "is a phony declaration that is unenforceable with no money attached", she just starts making things up. Check out the clip here, and then let’s dig into the claims🧵

The Prime Minister calls Canada’s forced labour protections “the most rigorous.” But we’ve blocked just ONE shipment. The U.S. has stopped over 4,000. With this record—and ongoing reluctance to acknowledge forced labour in China—there’s little reason to believe Liberals will stop Chinese EVs made with forced labour from entering Canada.

BREAKING: Liberals on the Industry Committee just refused to allow the playing of an audio recording of the robocall Stellantis made to the 3,000 employees they laid off in Brampton. Workers deserve to have this on the record. Here is the audio they didn’t want you to hear:

“This (Chinese EV agreement) will undermine Canada’s supplier base and hollow out our skilled automotive workforce.” Those are the words of GM Canada, one of the largest employers in the auto sector. When we allow these EVs into our market virtually tariff-free, we facilitate the exodus of billions in economic activity and the thousands of good paying jobs it provides. The government is walking clumsily into a disaster—for our auto sector, workers, and the broader industrial base. The fence is down and the deer are in the garden. Watch:

How is this possible in Canada? A woman working two jobs in Manitoba cannot afford groceries. She lost her home after interest rates skyrocketed. What is the government’s response? More of the same: massive deficits and social programs that won't solve the problem.
