I have said it many times, “Enough is enough!” Chicago taxpayers cannot always be forced to pay for the actions of criminals. Today seventeen of my colleagues joined me in voting “No” on an $8.9 Million settlement that resulted because two armed teens hijacked vehicles, tried evade capture, and killed a bystander in the process. Her death is a tragedy - no question. But the originators of this tragedy aren’t the City or its police. It is those criminals that live with zero regard for the lives of others.

WAKE UP, CHICAGO! When our City Treasurer plays politics with your money, we lose. When our City Treasurer makes asinine statements about our country and our Constitution, we become un-American. The third-largest City in the country is now at risk of losing guaranteed investments and returns on those investments because our City Treasurer, someone who swore an oath to uphold the US Constitution, wants to politicize her office. The irony, however, is that on the day the Chicago Board of Ethics spoke of the pitfalls of good government, the Treasurer chose to use her time on the dais to boost her congressional campaign, with taxpayer dollars. This is shameful, and our working families will suffer because of it.

Chicago Tribune: City Council blocks $1.25 million settlement for Dexter Reed’s family Ald. Raymond Lopez, 15th, said Burnett’s statement left him “speechless.” “What the hell is going on in this room,” he said. “To sit here and say that we are going to give license to individuals to shoot officers when they are pulled over, two days after we just had an officer kill herself.” Lopez told Fronczak the city’s Law Department should sue Reed’s family to recoup costs associated with the wounded officer’s injuries. “You all should be ashamed of yourself for what you all are inspiring and allowing,” he said. “You want to settle because it’s cheaper? You are sending a message to every criminal, and you are also sending a message to every officer on the street that their lives don’t matter anymore.”

Amnesty NOW! Since I was elected, I have advocated for real solutions for the millions of undocumented immigrants, mainly from Mexico, who are law-abiding. These undocumented immigrants are functionally and socially American—deeply integrated into the cultural and economic fabric of our nation! Love it or hate it, undocumented individuals are here to stay. While we may be upset that Biden/Harris permitted millions of asylum seekers from South America to enter with legal protective status, leapfrogging longtime immigrants, they are not what this is about. This is about the millions of undocumented immigrants who have been here almost my entire life, who are as American as I am, except for a piece of paper that makes them legal residents. Stop targeting the decent, hardworking undocumented immigrants. They are owed the same opportunities that this country offered so many so many years ago. AMNESTY NOW!

Thanks to Sandra Smith of America Reports for having me on. Let's be 100% clear, there is a HUGE difference between undocumented immigrants, including DACA immigrants, who continue to live in the shadows, contribute to the economy, make this nation run, and who have roots in many of our communities, AND immigrants who come here to cause havoc, hold neighborhoods hostage by terrorizing them, and who CHOOSE to commit violent crimes. Sadly, the lines continue to get blurred by extremists on the left, within our own Democratic party, who would rather sacrifice the good, hardworking undocumented to protect the violent criminal undocumented. When we get back to the center, we can begin to protect our longtime immigrants with a pathway to permanent residency while removing dangerous criminals. This should not be that complicated!

Before you do anything else today, watch this video until the end! I know I'm not every Latino's cup of tea, but I've NEVER been inconsistent with my beliefs that undocumented Mexicans in Chicago, especially those who build our economy, raise families in our neighborhoods, and are productive members of our communities, deserve a pathway toward citizenship. I even ran for Congress last year because I felt that our federal leaders were forgetting about the undocumented, the Dreamers, and those with U Visas. Ask any undocumented Mexican immigrant in my community about how they feel being leapfrogged for the Venezuelan asylum seekers, and they'll tell you how betrayed they feel by the Lightfoot administration and now the Johnson Administration, and his Aldermen, who have prioritized them over our families. Say what you will about me. The truth doesn't change. When I met with Tom Homan, he point-blank said that he was only interested in the violent criminals in our communities. I went back to this administration and my colleagues to get them to amend the Welcoming City Ordinance so that Chicago Police could work with federal agencies, but only for those violent criminals. This administration, this Mayor and his Aldermen, Aldermen like Julia Ramirez, Jeylu Gutierrez, & Michael Rodriguez, all Mexican-Americans, said no. They instead taunted Tom Homan and told him, “Go find them yourself!” That’s exactly what Homan and ICE are doing now in our communities, and, as a result, are capturing those without a single criminal record to their name, destroying families, and stoking fear in my communities. They, and those who taunted this president and his agencies and challenged him to find the criminals themselves, are directly responsible for the trauma that’s occurring in Mexican communities like Back of the Yards, Brighton Park, Gage Park, and Chicago Lawn. History will remember when Brandon Johnson and these Aldermen did this to our families.

The Mayor continues to prioritize special interest groups over the blue-collar, hardworking families of this City. This isn’t a social studies project on civics, although our Mayor leads us to believe it is. This budget and the major impacts it has and will continue to have for years are real-life issues that affect not just the communities in my ward but the entire City. I commend my colleagues, those who aren’t beholden to the Mayor and his special interest groups, who took the time to put aside differences for the good of the City and voted NO on this budget. Our coalition of common-sense leaders wasn’t about "what’s in it for my community," but rather, "what’s in the best interest of the taxpayers of the City of Chicago?" The 2025 Budget vote will surely have lasting consequences. I want residents of the 15th Ward and the City of Chicago to know that I fought and will continue to fight for what is in your best interest, the taxpayer!
