The Mayor continues to prioritize special interest groups over the blue-collar, hardworking families of this City. This isn’t a social studies project on civics, although our Mayor leads us to believe it is. This budget and the major impacts it has and will continue to have for years are...

Ray, you're the only level-headed adult in City Hall. And a man who cares about your ward and all of Chicago. Johnson is so far out of his league he has no business being mayor of the CTU.

Every alder person that voted yes should be ashamed of themselves and lose their next election. Thanks Ray for all that you do!

Chicagoans. Aren’t we done with this miserable progressive political experiment yet. Kitchen table issues … need to take priority once again or Chicago is finished.

All Chicagoans need to take note on who votes for this. Stand behind the ones looking out for the interest of the city as a whole. Chicago deserves better.

As previously stated, all of the alderman who voted for this budget should have every one of their pet projects vetoed by the alderman who voted no. Shut them all down. No honorary street signs, no traffic circles, zoning changes, liquor licenses, etc, etc. They get nothing.

WATCH: Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker comes out strongly today against Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s “head tax” proposal. “I am absolutely foursquare opposed to a head tax for the city of Chicago. It penalizes the very thing that we want, which is more employment in the city of Chicago. It makes it very hard to attract companies from outside the city to come in and harder for companies already here to stay.” Pritzker also said Johnson needs to work harder to find efficiencies in the city budget, rather than threatening the economic growth of the city and state with a new tax on jobs. “Balancing the budget for the state of Illinois and for the city of Chicago is vital. It can’t be ignored, it has to be done, but it shouldn’t be done with a head tax in the city of Chicago… “I am confident the city can do it. Look, you’ve got to start with efficiencies. You’ve got to go into city government—and I haven’t seen any of that in this budget so far. That’s going to have to happen because there are going to be changes. People are not going to like certain kinds of revenue enhancements that he’s got in his budget. So you’ve got to find efficiencies, and there are efficiencies to be found—some with technology, some because we have departments doing things that maybe we don’t need done. And finally, how about we do our best to attract, retain, and grow businesses in the city of Chicago, because that, again, is the best way for us to pay the bills.” Under Johnson’s proposal all companies employing 100+ people in Chicago would have to pay a tax of $21 per employee per month. As Pritzker correctly points out, it’s a punishment for creating jobs.

My goal in this budget process has always been to make sure we’re funding core, basic services in a balanced and disciplined manner. We know there is an inherent tension between asking people to pay rates, fees and taxes— and the issue of affordability. We want to make sure our city can provide the quality-of-life services that our residents deserve, but we also want to make sure we’re putting affordability first in our community. While I worry a lot about affordability, I also worry about the ability of our city to deliver quality services without more revenue. I strongly believe that if we're not making the kinds of investments we need to make in our people and our services, we will be managing decay in Austin in a very short period of time. This budget will not meet everyone’s concept of perfection. Truthfully, there are parts of the budget that I don’t like. That goes with living in a big, diverse city—different people will have different priorities, and we need to make room for all of us. Now, it is time for us to trust our voters. Voters have an opportunity in November to make a very important decision. From my perspective, the best part of this budget is that we fully fund our homeless strategy office. That was my greatest emphasis, and we've achieved it. It will make a world of difference in getting homeless people off the street in a very short period of time. I'm also very pleased with what we’ve added to funding for public safety, EMS, and wildfire prevention. A positive vote in the November tax rate election will allow us to pay for these needed services. And we make a significant investment in our parks. I look forward to a result that will be the best benefit of our community.
