You see whining about "clunky" old games because old games lack the player assists found in newgen games, which are literally designed for actual idiots on the assumption that the average player won't be able to learn how the game works for themselves. Almost every action game now has: >strong autotracking on attacks >tons of i-frames >no "checkmate" situations that are unrecoverable; endless mulligans so the player sees "you died/game over" as little as possible >no lives, timers, scoring, or any other hard constraints on the player; failure doesn't cost anything >multi-step actions triggered by single button presses like sliding/dashing to go faster, instant takedowns, etc; no need to combine multiple actions or learn any techniques like crouchjumping, bhopping, rocket/grenade jumping >"cinematic" boss fights where the core gameplay may be totally absent and the "fight" is relegated to QTEs >strong enemy leashing that keeps enemies in tiny areas, allowing you to whittle them down with no risk They are deliberately designing games to place as few expectations on the player as possible and when someone who has only experienced these new games is shown an old game without these "quality of life" features, they call it "clunky" because the game is designed to actually be played by the player.

From what I'm seeing of the new Bond gameplay it all looks very on rails. "Oh, a catwalk fell down, press jump to trigger an automated cinematic jump across. Quick, get in this boat with a gun you can't manually aim. Now hold W for two minutes." Very disappointing.

CBS News ran a segment asking "has support for Lindsay Clancy gone too far?" where they bring on two sympathetic women, a psychologist, and one heel who's just there to make it seem "fair." When asked about Patrick, even the heel says he "seemed cold" on the stand. All of them say he "could have done better." This man took paternity leave, paid for a nanny, paid for his wife to go to doctors, many of whom she lied to about the cocktail of meds she was taking. We keep hearing about how "the system" failed Lindsay or how Patrick failed Lindsay, but is this not the point of a doctor? Doctors can only act on the information YOU give them. And we expect Patrick to have micromanaged all that in addition to working full-time to provide for his family?

Video game discourse has fallen so far that we have Yahtzee describing rudely-named difficulty settings as "ableist" and whining about how "patronizing" designers are. He suggests adaptive difficulty as the best solution because "no one has to see it." What if I specifically want the game to be harder, period? Why should difficulty be a self-tuning black box hidden away from the player? This is just another step towards making games into guided amusement park tours. If I'm stuck on a difficult section or boss, I don't want it automatically toned down, I want to get better at the game and beat it. He even brings up DMC games as an example of being "too patronizing" because it doesn't give you an easy mode unless you die enough times, but you know what? The higher difficulties are locked at the start, too. Some of us would say that's patronizing. Why shouldn't I be able to choose Hard mode right away?
