A ship is stranded at sea around 1 km inside the water from Manori beach. Gorai police said they have informed the coast guard. The beach is rocky and due to high wind speed, the local fishing community said it would be dangerous for a small boat to enter the water and move towards the ship to check. Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide on Thursday said BMC will file a police complaint against the contractor responsible for the drain maintenance work at Saki Naka, where a 60-year-old man died after falling into an open manhole. She said preliminary findings and CCTV footage pointed to serious lapses in mandatory safety measures at the work site. After reviewing CCTV footage, the commissioner said these precautions were absent.

A 60-year-old man died after falling into an open manhole on Khairani Road in Sakinaka on Thursday afternoon while civic drain maintenance work was underway. The deceased, identified as Aslam Sheikh, allegedly stepped into an uncovered manhole. According to eyewitnesses, three contractual workers had removed the manhole cover to carry out drain maintenance. Sheikh, who was reportedly talking on his mobile phone, did not notice the opening and fell into the stormwater drain. The workers immediately lowered a ladder into the manhole in an attempt to rescue him. However, they recovered only his umbrella and slippers. Due to the strong flow of rainwater inside the drain, officials said it was impossible to determine the direction in which he had been swept away, triggering a search operation by the Mumbai Fire Brigade.

Came across this video that brings to light— Who was Neville Dsouza ? The first Asian footballer to score a hat-trick at the Olympic Games during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Over the last two months Bandra’s Neville D’Souza Football Ground has become the centre of a growing controversy after the BMC initiated the process to change the land reservation of the site from a “sports ground and playground” to an “exhibition and convention centre.”

For me, as a journalist, a woman breaking new ground will always be a story worth telling. “Why?” some might ask. Haven’t we achieved gender parity across professions? We’ve certainly come a long way. But the truth is, women are still hustling twice—often three times—as hard, balancing expectations that extend far beyond the workplace. So when I learnt that the Mumbai Fire Brigade had inducted its first-ever woman Driver-cum-Operator, I knew I had to tell her story. From driving on the village roads of Ahilyanagar as a teenager chasing a dream, to now steering massive fire engines through Mumbai’s streets, Pallavi Patil,29, has come a long way. Behind her journey is another dream—that of her father, who once aspired to join the military but had to give it up to shoulder his family’s farming responsibilities. He made sure his daughter got the opportunity he never did. Pallavi’s story is one of grit, determination and dreams passed from one generation to the next. A perfect weekend read. Happy reading.

The newly appointed BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide said, “I thank the Maharashtra government for entrusting me with this responsibility. I would also like to congratulate Bhushan Gagrani sir on his successful tenure at the BMC. I joined the civil services inspired by him—he is from Kolhapur and I am from Sangli—so taking over from him is particularly meaningful for me. I have spent four crucial years in the BMC, including during the challenging COVID period, which has been an invaluable experience. This institution, with a legacy spanning over 150 years, carries immense heritage even as it continuously reinvents itself. As I take over the reins as Commissioner, I look forward to navigating new challenges with my team and building on the work of my predecessors to deliver to the best of our abilities.” Video by Imtiyaz shaikh
