Former Mumbai mayor and UBT group leader in the BMC, Kishori Pednekar, on Monday along with party Corporators met municipal commissioner Ashwini Bhide, demanding an immediate halt to the civic body’s proposed demolition drive against slum structures exceeding 14ft in height. The drive, scheduled from October 1 to December 31, targets around 39,111 structures. Pednekar questioned the timing of the action during the festive season and sought clarity on the rehabilitation plan for affected families. She also alleged that the BMC was selectively targeting the poor while failing to act against illegal constructions by builders and developers.

FDA has suspended the FSSAI licence of popular eatery Kyani & Co. in Kalbadevi with immediate effect after an inspection on September 27 found several serious hygiene and food safety violations. Inspectors found cats, rat droppings, live flies and dead cockroaches in the food preparation and storage areas. A large amount of blood had accumulated inside a refrigerator, while an open sewage manhole was found in the processing area. Officials also found food stored directly on the floor, raw dough covered with printed newspaper, staff not following required hygiene practices or using personal protective equipment, and improper segregation of raw and ready-to-eat food. In view of the deficiencies and the potential risk to consumers, the establishment’s FSSAI licence (No. 11517001000318) has been suspended under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

This time-lapse tells the story. From 7 am to 7 pm, this garbage vulnerable point (GVP) in Worli sees waste dumped, cleared by the माझी Mumbai, आपली BMC, dumped again, and cleaned up again—on repeat throughout the day. It shows why simply cleaning isn’t enough. The cycle of littering has to be broken through strict enforcement, CCTV surveillance, penalties for offenders, and sustained public participation. Only then can Mumbai’s streets remain truly clean.
