“Se7en” was released 31 years ago today. Fincher’s bleak masterpiece isn’t exactly loaded with laughs—but I love the moment when Somerset is taken aback by the absolute unit of wine pour Mills has poured for him.

The final scene in “Vanilla Sky” (released in Dec. 2001) was set in 2151. Cameron Crowe chose not to digitally erase the Twin Towers. He kept the images intact as a tribute. I love that. ❤️🙏🏻

RIP Donnie Iris. The video for “Ah! Leah!” looks like it had a budget of $150–and that’s what makes it so great. This song was EVERYWHERE on AOR stations in 1980. To this day, it remains a Western Pennsylvania staple.

Tonight’s midnight movie: Peter Weir’s “Witness” (1985). The reveal scene with the camera tracking Samuel’s POV is a masterwork. No dialogue needed.

Movie Law: Teachers are terrible at clock management. They always seem surprised when the bell rings, and as the students hurry out, the teachers’ reminders about homework assignments or overdue papers go unheeded.

On the 39th anniversary of Ferris Bueller’s actual Day Off, here’s your reminder Mr. Bueller apparently had never met his son’s girlfriend Sloane Peterson, though she clearly recognized him.

Now watching: Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor,” released 13 years ago today. I might’ve been the only critic in America to give this movie ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I stand by that. It’s a bleak, sexy, lurid, strange, balls-out gem. Still entertaining as hell.

Movie Law: When just about everyone in the control room celebrates because it appears the crisis has been averted, there’s always one technician who remains at their station—and one savant who realizes the REAL crisis has just begun. 💻🚀🔭🛰️

You know what bugs me about those reaction shots of Taylor Swift? Absolutely nothing. It’s like 20 seconds total out of a three-hour game. It would be insane NOT to show a massive pop star cheering on her future HOF husband.

Rest in peace to Roberta Flack. Her cover of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” is one of the most beautiful songs in pop history. Clint Eastwood played the entire 5 minutes+ in an extraordinarily touching scene in “Play Misty For Me.”

The powerful, dialogue-free sequence in “Heat” when Chris realizes he can’t come home. Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd are low-key masterful.

Christian Bale once told me he was particularly proud of “Out of the Furnace,” and he wished more people had seen it. Couldn’t agree more. It was No. 2 on my list of the best films of 2013.

RIP to Chicago native Jennifer Runyon, who was in “Ghostbusters,” “The Falcon and the Snowman” and “18 Again!” Jennifer was one of the first actors I ever interviewed — a lovely person who later moved into a career in teaching. Her father was a DJ, including a stint at WCFL. 🙏🏼❤️
