Elected officials say there are no Somali gangs here, and yet, Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher says there have been a hundred shootings and 14 Somali gang-related deaths in the last year. He’s created a unit devoted to Somali gangs, and brought us inside. Several of his deputies are Somali. Deputy Jama Shine tells me “I'm from the community. This case doesn't represent me. It doesn't represent our community. We need it to stop, and we need to hold them accountable.” Sheriff Fletcher Ramsey Sheriff (MN) likens the situation to what’s happened in Europe: “we better work our butts off right now to fix this problem in the Somali community, or we are going to launch into a 200-year legacy that won't be unlike what some of the European countries are seeing."
