At just 22 years old, Hank Blalock took down the most dominant closer in baseball. On July 15, 2003, he came off the bench and crushed a two-out, two-run homer off Eric Gagné to put the American League ahead 7-6. Gagné went 55-for-55 in save chances that season and won the Cy Young. Hank got him anyway, with World Series home-field advantage on the line. That swing is exactly why Rangers fans loved Hammerin’ Hank.

Adrián Beltré was already a Rangers legend and one of the greatest third basemen baseball had ever seen. On July 30, 2017, hit No. 3,000 made his place in history impossible to argue. Beltré doubled down the left-field line. His family joined the celebration as he became the 31st player in MLB history and the first Dominican-born player to reach 3,000 hits. That was Beltré in Texas. Greatness, joy, and a ballpark that loved him right back.

Rougned Odor never met smoke he wouldn’t send back with interest. On July 18, 2015, Hank Conger motioned him back into the batter’s box, words were exchanged, and both benches emptied at Minute Maid Park. Once everybody cleared out, Odor stepped back in and ripped a leadoff triple. Texas scored twice in the inning and needed every bit of it in a 7-6 win. Peak Rougie. Start the argument if you want. Just understand he was probably getting the last word.

The greatest postseason pitching performance in #TexasRangers franchise history belongs to Derek Holland. Argue with a wall. Texas was down 2-1 in the 2011 World Series against St. Louis, facing a potentially devastating 3-1 hole. A 25 year old Derek Holland, fresh off a 16-win regular season, was tasked with limiting a stout St. Louis offense. Holland’s final line: 8.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 7 K. Legendary.

Adrián Beltré homered against the Rangers on August 13, 2010. Still looks wrong. Also, David Ortiz, Adrián Beltré and J.D. Drew went back-to-back-to-back to start a seven-run fourth that put Boston up 8-2. Josh Hamilton went 4-for-5 and made an insane catch at the wall before Nelson Cruz walked it off on Tim Wakefield’s first pitch of the 11th. Man that 2010 team just never did anything quietly.

The best high school pitcher in the draft just fell to the Rangers at No. 16. Gio Rojas is a 6-foot-4 lefty who posted a 0.58 ERA with 124 strikeouts in 72 innings as a senior. His fastball reaches 98, the slider misses bats, and MLB Pipeline ranked him No. 8 overall in the entire class. Prep arms always come with risk. But man, this is exactly the kind of upside swing I want Texas taking.

Absolutely no one needs to be defending this defense after tonight. It’s completely embarrassing that Jack Leiter has to eat 5 ER and a loss in that gem of a start. • The Burger misplay had a .250 xBA. Easy double play and inning ender. • The Smith misplay had a .180 xBA. Also would have ended the inning. This isn’t JV baseball. It’s the major leagues. The offense didn’t improve enough this season for the defense to go from best in the league to middle of the pack. Both plays HAVE to be made to keep this game at a two-run deficit.

On July 19, 2000, the Rangers quietly made the trade that defined an era. Texas sent Esteban Loaiza to Toronto for a Double-A infielder named Michael Young. The first and final hits of his Rangers career tell only a fraction of the story. In between came 2,230 hits, seven All-Star selections, a batting title, and two pennants. The trade did not look franchise-changing that day. But No. 10 made sure it became one. For a generation of us, Michael Young was the standard.

On July 16, 2010, Molina singled, doubled, crushed a grand slam, and somehow completed the cycle with a triple at Fenway. “Pigs have flown in Boston, Massachusetts!” Josh Lewin really found the only possible way to call that moment. Good stuff here from AJ on the broadcast. Small ball has worked well for Texas, no doubt, but with Smith and Wynns up next, it’s a curious decision. Bunting just can’t be a variable for guys like Osuna. Has to be as automatic as humanly possible, especially when you’re desperate for playing time.

July 9 was apparently Josh Hamilton’s day to ruin somebody’s night. July 9, 2008, against the Angels with Josh Lewin absolutely losing his mind on the call. July 9, 2011, against the A’s to extend the winning streak to 6. Different years, same ending: Hambone circling the bases while Arlington lost its mind.
