a nice thing about the coding robots is being able to resurrect old demos/etc. I've wanted to re-implement this decal-texturing interface from my SIGGRAPH 2006 ExpMap paper for ... holy shit ~20 years ... but never had the right place & time

Hotspot Texturing is pretty neat...took about a day to build this as an tool plugin for UE5 Modeling Mode.

just posted an update to my UE Toolbox, fixing a few bugs and adding some new drawing tools (thx @b_swinny). A great thing about not being tied to the UE release cycle is that I can do this every week, not twice a year!

more magic/AI mesh selection, this one w/ SAM2 which takes an initial box/points instead of a text prompt. SAM2 is much faster, in 'stream' mode I can send it frames like it's processing a video (this capture is 1x, SAM2 running locally on 8GB 3070ti).

seen a few posts about optimizing GenAI 3D assets for game use so I figured I would make a vid about the UE5 AutoLOD tool I wrote ~4 years ago that nobody knows about (even at Epic apparently). Here's the first two mins, see 🧵for full video.

wild how good img/video-to-depth models are now, I had no idea ... this is DepthAnythingV2 (~2024) vs Pi3X (~2026). Went from vaguely-correct to ballpark-3D-scan quality in 2 years. And Pi3X generates it's own cameras, no COLMAP.
