So the coolest area in Shanghai now is West Bund, which used to be a factory & port area. The factories have been turned into museums & performance art spaces, a bunch of riverside retail followed, and a lot of AI companies moved into the offices nearby. I can’t keep up with all of the changes. I thought the AI companies were in Caohejing & I was told that nope it’s now West Bund lol (It’s got pretty good crowds, it looks empty because I was filming right before a big thunderstorm & it was muggy af)

So for 3000 RMB or $440 a month you can rent this robot to fold your laundry (poorly IMO) or play chess with your kid (not very useful). When I asked what else can it do, the guy said “oversee homework” Don’t laugh, this is a real need in China. There’s a ton of homework and it’s hard & lots of parents get super frustrated helping their kids with homework and are looking for relief. There’s a whole genre of short videos of various parents losing their sh*t trying to help their kids with homework that is extremely funny

I’m in a top 100 “town” in China. It’s more than an hour south of Suzhou & 400K people. It’s below “5th tier” because it’s not a city. As you can see, it’s still quite developed. There is an OK mall nearby but this is a more typical retail area which is chock full of children’s study / activity centers. I counted at least ten calligraphy / art / dance / tutoring / programming after school The involution is strong

This Chinese tier 4 city downtown mall is really just as nice as any mid-end mall in tier 1 cities now, lots of major jewelry brands, Starbucks, Manner AND Algebraist Coffee, 4D VR gaming (see girl at end of clip shooting things) What a huge difference from ten years ago
