I’ll admit, I got emotional seeing this. The dehumanizing hate online has been overwhelming for some time. It’s a small gesture, one that didn’t have to happen, but it speaks volumes.

It was standing room only for Mike Pompeo as well. Must say this year’s CFSN felt remarkably low energy overall. Even the reaction to Pierre Poilievre’s speech felt tepid, people queued up for selfies afterwards, but the actual atmosphere was pretty subdued.

In more sensible times, this wouldn’t even need saying. A devout Hindu American of Indian origin, the Second Lady and a potential future First Lady comforting a devout Christian grieving the tragic assassination of her husband. One of the first people that Erika Kirk thanked in her eulogy was Usha Vance. Images like this capture what has long made America great. And yet, judging by the sheer volume of anti-Indian and anti-Hindu bigotry spilling across X in both the U.S. and Canada, there are those who would rather tear that down. I'm a big believer in America, and I know it will make it through this dark moment. If history shows us anything, it’s that America has an unmatched ability to rebound from crisis and rise to even greater heights. That resilience is what makes America such an inspiration.

Last night, walking home, I had to cut through a parking lot just to avoid the drug dealers, addicts, and vagrants who’ve taken over the sidewalks. I’ve lived in or visited plenty of major American cities, and never felt this level of unease or lack of basic safety on the street.

In December 2023, Pierre Poilievre referred to Ukraine as a "far away foreign land" while attacking Justin Trudeau for ignoring problems in Canada. He clearly wasn't all in at that point. That was the right position at a point when he was riding high in the polls. But this latest post shows there's zero daylight between him and Trudeau and the Liberals on a full throated support for Ukraine and Zelensky. On so many issues, the Conservatives have largely converged with the Liberals. Maybe this will win them the next election by bringing in more voters sitting on the fence, but it'll come at a cost of compromising basic conservative principles, and further alienating the United States, our most important ally and trading partner despite current tensions. The idea we don't need the US is a pipe dream that everyone seems to have embraced.

The state of Lowertown, Ottawa is a disgrace. It's impossible not to mention unsafe to walk down the sidewalk on either side of George Street between Cumberland and Dalhousie, and up Cumberland to Rideau as they're completely taken over by homeless people, drugs dealers, pimps and prostitutes. Residents are essentially boxed in.

Waiting for Pierre Poilievre to speak any minute now at his last and final rally. Maybe a couple of thousand people here so far.

I spent part of my childhood in the Middle East before immigrating to Canada in my late teens. None of my Muslim girlfriends liked wearing the hijab or niqab. Whenever they could, they took it off because they found it oppressive. If their parents found out, there would be consequences. I often helped my friends carve out a few hours of freedom at real personal risk. Some came from extremely powerful families. Had I been caught, they could have had me jailed and deported. Anyone who has actually lived in an Islamic society understands how pervasive and institutionalized the oppression is, especially for women and girls. While conditions have improved in a handful of places, the absence of genuine theological reform in Islam means many of these changes are superficial, largely designed to make life more comfortable for expatriates rather than to liberate local women. So imagine my horror when Canada began celebrating World Hijab Day which is a celebration of paternalism and the normalization of female subordination. Many naive Canadians particularly white folks are deeply naïve about Islam. A kind of white saviour multiculturalism prevails, "isn’t diversity wonderful, therefore everything associated with it must be good". Children are assumed to lack full agency. If a child says she wants to wear the hijab or niqab, an enlightened parent should say no, and revisit the question when she is an adult. The rationale behind the hijab is explicit: it exists to shield women from the male gaze. When young girls are made to wear it, they are being sexualized at an age when they should not be thinking about sexuality at all. This video is of Liberal MP Salma Zahid commemorating World Hijab Day in the House of Commons. She has blocked me for my views on the hijab.
