The Triple Lock should be abolished asap. It would be welcome and brave if Andy Burnham announced that at #LabourConference today. But it will not and should not pay for free at the point of use social care. The savings from abolishing the Triple Lock would be touching the sides of replacing current private contributions for elderly social care. And we cannot have an entitlement for the older population funding yet another entitlement for the older population. The State Pension is welfare. It is the biggest expenditure line of the DWP, representing around 46% of its total budget. Scrapping the Triple Lock should only be the first step towards reforming the State Pension. The State Pension Age should be raised to 70 asap and it should be means-tested. The successful introduction and expansion of government-subsidised auto-enrolment for private pensions justifies these reforms to the State Pension. Me for Talk

Thank you to Talk for having me on to discuss why I think we should be raising both the State Pension Age and the Normal Minimum Pension Age for private pension drawdown I hope the State Pension Age Review and the Pensions Commission established by the Pensions Minister Torsten Bell proposes this and the normalisation of retiring at the age of 70 as soon as possible.
