まるで天女の羽衣を纏ったような姿。アシロ科のハナトゲアシロの稚魚です。 和名の鼻棘は吻に棘を備える特徴が由来ですが、英名はbony-eared assfish。bony-earedは尖った耳を表し(実際は鰓蓋棘)、assはロバを表す意味ではなく、奇妙な体形・間抜けに見える姿 を表す俗称的な意味で使われています。
