Our dear leftist friends like their international leftist narratives that don’t allow them to criticize their own country (or perhaps it’s just plain old expediency, they have to live in Pakistan after all, and talking about the Indian left instead of their own country is much easier). Then there are scions of domestic dictators who broke the country and imposed censorship, had the Baloch thrown from planes and many similar democratic acts; they obviously want to continue to stake their claims in the place where daada jaan was king. Fortunately I don’t have any such issues.

I will continue repeating this till I can’t, Pakistani liberals use Zia as shorthand to pretend that the Pakistani state had any moral standing to begin with. It was always a debased idea and Jinnah fully participated in the deliberate confusion that is the hallmark of Pakistan to this day. This is what he created. This is Jinnah’s Pakistan.

Pakistan’s music has always been its strong suit. Shamim Ara was a charming woman indeed, and flowing are some of my favorite songs featuring her. I sometimes feel even those paying tributes rely on Wikipedia-level knowledge, not any real love for the people they are trying to dig up to discover a historical legacy. This is one of my fave Noor Jahan songs, picturized on Shamim Ara
