37 years of Gitanjali. Released during May, the movie was not just a success, it was a phenomenon of it's time. A milestone in Nag's career. It was a typical Boy Meets Girl story only here both of em are having a terminal disease. It was Mani Ratnam's narration that made all the difference, way he etched out the relationship between the two, the growing love, it was more sensitive, subtle. Mani was already popular in Telugu land with dubbed versions of Mouna Raagam, Nayagan, Agni Natchatram( Gharshana) all Proving to be as big a success as their Tamil original. This was his first and only direct movie in Telugu. And his taking was something never seen before in Telugu cinema. The picturization of the songs was mind blowing. Heroine's intro song Jallantha Kavintha was so beautifully shot, almost on same level as Julie Andrews intro in Sound of Music. Or the epic level picturization of Oh Priya Priya. Or Oh Papa Laali with it's dreamy, misty landscape. Mani created a kind of dream world on the screen with rainy, misty landscapes, lush green hills. Ooty never looked so beautiful on screen. PC Sreeram's camera work was outstanding. And Ilayaraja what can be said, Maestro creates magic with one of his best albums ever. Had this cassette at home used to play it non stop. The BGM was equally great. Gitanjali was the kinda movie whose appeal cut across all boundaries . Youth, families, middle aged, elders just about everyone loved it. It dominated conversations, "Have you seen Gitanjali" was the question that invariably popped up. 1989 would be Nag's year, this and Shiva forever changed Telugu cinema in many ways.
