I have a #Dubai story. (Most Mallus do). My dad’s older brother Radhakrishnan Unnithan (now 86) was an early emigrant to Dubai. 1975. Just 4 years after its independence. In the 1990s he ran a sand washing plant in the Al Quoz industrial area owned by a prominent Emirati business family, the Al Ghurairs. The plant - a desert within a desert- provided the sand that built the shimmering Dubai skyline of today. A decade ago, the plant was shut down. Al Quoz was gentrified. The city it had helped build, swallowed it. What happened next is interesting because it epitomises the Emirati spirit and business acumen…

One month since #IranWar began. Spoke to my dad Cdr GVK Unnithan (R), 83 yo- 30 yrs in SpokespersonNavy , 20 yrs in merchant marine. Turns out he’s operated a lot in #PersianGulf, piloted the INS Vikrant into Bandar Abbas 1976, was based in the Port of Khasab on the Musandam peninsula - early 2000s. Today is #RajivGandhi’s 35th death anniversary. In March 2013 I became the first and till date, the only Indian journalist to visit the bunker of the man who ordered his assassination — LTTE Chief Velupillai Prabhakaran. I was then a reporter with IndiaToday magazine & granted rare access to the erstwhile LTTE-controlled northern region where thousands of LTTE fighters and civilians had died in the final phase of Eelam War IV in May 2009. We saw the exact spot, Nanthikadal, where Prabhakaran was gunned down by troops of the Sri Lankan Army’s 53rd division. Prabhakaran lay on his back on a patch of mud-soaked grass, eyes wide, his head blown open by a high-caliber weapon. The Lankan soldiers had shown Prabhakaran as much mercy as he had shown former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991. For someone who had followed India’s fascinating and bloody entanglement in Sri Lanka through India Today magazine, and the exclusives of Shekhar Gupta through the 1980s, this was a dream story. How did a print story become a TV exclusive ? I’ll admit to some journalistic sleight-of-hand here. The Sri Lankan authorities had cleared us to report a print story, but we also shot high-res video footage on DSLR (standard-issue for print photographers). The story eventually played across all India Today group properties— TV, Mail Today and the magazine. Five months after our story broke, the Sri Lankan army filled the bunker with explosives and destroyed it. Sarpa Pooja this morning in my ancestral home the 150-yr old Pokatutharayil house in Kayamkulam. My v enlightened cousins who’ve spent a small fortune to preserve the family home exactly as it was (minus the interlocking tiles) perform this ritual each year. Puja performed in the Sarpa Kavu (snake grove) - my favourite part of the estate- the abode of the Naga Devatas. 🐍 🐍 Many coconut trees on the estate symbolise generations of the family who’ve passed on over the last century. (planted on the funeral site). #Keralam

Cut to 2025- Times have changed. We’re not a sheep state. Tahuwwur Rana is being bundled into a plane and being brought back to face trial in India. He will rot in jail. His deep state bosses in Pakistan are looking over their shoulders and under their beds. And my father? He celebrated his 80th birthday recently. He chose the same hotel in Powai that Rana lived in. With his friends here (including Wing Cdr Krishnamurthy, from the 1971 surrender ceremony photo). The NSG Mumbai hub is just down the road. 4/4.

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Smt. Nirmala Mohan Samant beloved wife of Captain Mohan Narayan Rao Samant, MVC. She left for her heavenly abode today, surrounded by her family. Nirmala tai was a gracious and kind soul who touched the lives of everyone around her with her warmth, dignity, and quiet strength. She will be deeply missed by her family, and all those including me, who had the privilege of knowing her. Om Shanti Sadgati. Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari was part of the Indian Air Force strikes that hit Tiger Hill on June 24, 1999. Nuclear powered attack submarines are deployed in stealth … countries are not obliged to disclose patrols, or locations, especially in war or near-war conditions. Even the US. That’s the nature of this beast. This classification stems from their core role in intelligence-gathering, anti-submarine warfare, strike, and other sensitive missions where revealing locations or routes would compromise safety. Second US F-15E crewman rescued. Heroic rescue by USAF. Combat Search and Rescue as my Indian Air Force friends attest, among the riskiest of AF ops. But this rescue was more than just ‘leave no man or woman behind’…was about the battle of visuals- US v clearly wanted to deny Iran the visual of a captured pilot in their custody… as I discussed with Geeta Mohan گیتا موہن गीता मोहन and GAURAV C SAWANT on India Today Global on Friday. #IranWar
