Britney Spears at the 2007 VMAs will forever be one of the saddest examples of how CRUEL the media machine could be. Probably one of the most disgusting displays of misogyny in pop culture history. She was living through absolute hell that year — relentless paparazzi harassment, a public mental health crisis, postpartum depression, grieving her aunt’s passing, and a brutal custody battle over her babies — and Sarah Silverman and MTV’s brilliant idea was to turn her pain into a punchline and humiliate her for entertainment. They didn’t see a young woman struggling. They saw engagement, money and entertainment. They saw a target. And the world laughed. Looking back, it’s honestly disgusting how normalized that cruelty towards Britney was. The whole thing aged like fucking MILK. Same show, same place. And you can REALLY see the difference between Justin’s audience and Britney’s. 😭 Justin had a crowd that was basically just horny teenage girls screaming for him, while Britney had boys, girls and kids across every age group, ethnicity and culture. JT knew that as a single guy, he would’ve worked much better as a solo. THAT alone tells you everything about Britney’s cultural impact and history.
