🚨Not one, but 2 Magnapinna squid! 🚨 The #doldrums team observed 2 elusive Magnapinna sp., commonly known as bigfin squid, at approximately 4,300 m (about 2.7 miles). Sightings of these animals are extremely rare — seeing two in one dive is extra exciting!

This is a deep-sea isopod. Dr. Johanna Weston, deep-ocean biologist and guest investigator at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), is confident this is Bathyopsurus nybelini, one of her favorite animals. Learn why via the YouTube caption:

This is a false catshark, Pseudotriakis microdon, named for catlike eyes. A bit soft around the middle — some might even say these ground sharks are flabby — and they move rather slowly, which led to another common name: “sofa shark.” #DeepWonders, 1,086 m

We’d like to tell you a joke about this squid, but it might fly right over your head.🦑 #TaludContinental_IV team suspects this beauty may be Ommastrephes bartramii — a red flying squid. They use a siphon as a jet propulsion system to launch out of the water &amp; evade predators.

Black swallower fish — swell dining in the deep! During a recent ROV dive near Trinidad &amp; Tobago, the #DeepWonders science team collected spectacular footage of a black swallower fish (Chiasmodon sp.) at a depth of 1259 meters.

Backward-swimming Bathyopsurus — a rare deep-sea isopod that lives between 4,000 and 11,000 m. They use two pairs of enlarged, paddle-like legs to swim; scientists have observed the animal moving backward and even upside down. #DeepWonders, Trinidad &amp; Tobago, 3,923 m

🦑 Squid squad alert! Possible whiplash squid fr the family Mastigoteuthidae. Filmed in #MarDelPlataCanyon in Argentina, where an international science team is exploring the diversity &amp; distribution of seafloor communities in one of the country’s largest deep-sea canyons. 🇦🇷

Fishy Fri: Bathypterois sp., tripod fish. Solitary &amp; stationary, these deep-sea denizens perch, facing into the current, above the seafloor using specialized fin rays. When an unsuspecting copepod or other tiny crustacean drifts by, this animal is set to snack. #Doldrums, 2,040m

ROV pilots filmed these sea spiders in #MarDelPlataCanyon during #TaludContinental_IV expedition in Argentina, where Argentine people are teaching us all how to experience the wonder of all deep-sea animals, many-legged and otherwise. 🇦🇷

Squid vibes: #DeepWonders team encountered this cutie at 1,045 m. They marveled at the specialized cells in their skin, chromatophores — these tiny sacs that contain pigment. As a squid relaxes &amp; contracts its muscles, it reveals or hides pigment for camouflage or communication.

This gathering belongs to the family Nephropidae. We suspect they are Thymops birsteini, or Patagonian lobsterette — crustaceans found on the continental shelf around S. America, particularly the Argentine Sea. #MarDelPlataCanyon #TaludContinental_IV

The #DeepWonders science team, led by Dr. Diva Amon of SpeSeas, is seeing many sea cucumbers, including these rhythmic water dancers that could be Benthothuria sp. They are part of the deep-sea cleanup crew, ingesting decaying detritus &amp; pooping clean sand along the seafloor.

Opisthoteuthis, or flapjack, a genus of cirrate octopuses observed at 1,040 meters during the #DeepWonders expedition. Using their umbrella-like body shape, they coast through the water. Their fins help guide their way (despite looking like large floppy ears).

Octopus locomotion 🐙 We believe this warty deep-sea octopus to be in the Graneledone genus of octopuses, and ROV pilots collected this footage in the #MarDelPlataCanyon in Argentina, where researchers are exploring &amp; documenting biodiversity.
