Rattlesnake bite on face. This heifer is swollen and snotty from snake bite. She is breathing normally and walking well. Eyes and nostrils are puffed and swollen but functional. We will give her an antibiotic to help w infection but otherwise she should recover in few days.

Performance over pretty. This is 40’ out of our main herd. She isn’t the prettiest or heaviest of cows but year in and out she produces one of our top 5 calves each season for quality and value. Not the most red or anything identifying but just winning. Calf queen🏆

#88’ Rocking. Tailhead is raised she is contracting. I did a check on her when I got there this morning. She did not fully dilate last night You can see her rocking her hips - I think to help position calf for birth. Hours now instead of days. Not ready just yet so we wait…

Time lapse of storm hitting Big Bow and neighboring houses. This is a couple minute condensed to 16 seconds Wheat fields have greened up we have good residue and cover. This likely isn’t our swks dirt but being shared from further west. If winds hit hard we could add to it 🫤

Found these yahoos out in field after they broke out of calf pen last night. They were not sure about what to do but came running when I hollered at them. Put them back up where they can be sorry for what they have done

Trick-or-Tank. After a scary weak on the cattle markets nobody is dressed up tonight. These calves lost over $200 a head in value this week — boxed beef — what you buy in the grocery stores was higher again for the week 🫤🫤🫤🫤

Calves drink a lot of water vs just milk. We try to run full tanks or smaller tanks that they can get access to water. Helps take pressure off cow as the calf isn’t looking for a drink but rather a meal. Good sign here

Drought pasture. Our grass is dry and dormant. Buffalo grass retains its nutrients in foliage above ground when it goes dormant so this is still good feed. We are supplementing diet with other feed stuffs to carry through this dry stretch. Chances of rain next week should help

Devils claw. The seed pod of the devils claw plant has a unique function to spread seeds. The claws will catch or latch onto a leg or such of an animal to be carried off where it will spread seeds. This the name.

Hantavirus hotel. Been in many an old truck or barn with mice residue. Believe I read that repeated exposure helped build a minor resistance to the virus but not sure. Seeing it come across posts as there is an active case in Kansas with related exposures to others.

Well pulling. This irrigation well needs repairs so we are having it pulled. Original well was drilled in 1930’s so going on 90 years or so Guessing this will be an expensive fix. - will prolly leave a dent 🫤

Big calf! Saw feet first thing this morning. Gave her about 15 minutes(tagged another calf) to check progress. Not much change (tagged another calf) and 15 minutes later she had this big heifer. Think we were much more concerned than cow was 🫤

Uniform planting. Corn planters are built to deposit seed at correct depth and spacing to maximize growing space while maintaining higher populations to maximize ears or yield potential Technology can track each seed dropped and mark it with gps reference point. Good stand here

Deficit water. We do not have enough volume of water to meet our crop needs on our limited water fields. (Lots of acres limited water) we plant dryland Stands and try to meet plant minimums to prevent flashing and hopefully buy time for next rain. July has been painfully dry 🙃

20 tons of manure per load. This is stockpiled manure from feeder pens that is 6 months to a year old generally. With the very high price of commercial fertilizer we are glad we were able to speak for a big chunk this winter. This isn’t cheap but it will last a bit longer

Replacement heifers. This crew is from our calves born last year. They are home raised and will be added to our herd as they will calve their first calf in the spring. Pasture conditions are dry but they are doing very well on body conditions and gain of weight/size 🏆

Here is a mother & calf in the same pasture. This bull calf was born today nearby our 88’. Tomorrow we work to make the adoption hold. 88’ has a condition that caused her to carry a huge amount of heavy dense fluid around the calf. We will begin looking after her recovery.

That’s how it’s done ! Spray pilot comes down to trim field edge. Misses trees and farm place down low to apply product to field - along power poles on one side with a small bump over sprinkler then back down to finish before a hard pull up to miss power lines at end of field 🏆

Data. Mapping the ogallala here in southwest Kansas. This will help validate groundwater models that provide guidance to management. This helicopter is flying over our ground here so we will be able to see what our test logs show vs radar (or whatever it’s called)
