Two hours on a train without WiFi means reverse engineering the Liquid Glass...liquid...effect? Reasonably simple API to work with: CASDFLayer, CASDFElementLayer and a CASDFEffect subclass, in this case CASDFFillEffect. You can wrap up in a UIView subclass, overriding layerClass to play nicely with higher-level UIKit animation abstractions.

UISheetPresentationController has a private _hidden property, and corresponding _setHidden: setter, that Apple Maps uses to declutter the UI when multiple sheet are stacked on top of one another. Combine this with some animated changes the presenting view controller's selectedDetentIdentifier full the full Maps experience.

It's hard not to add fuel to the "is SwiftUI production-ready" fire when this is the state of the "best way to build an app" 6 years after the framework was released... 🙃 ~30 lines of (admittedly sloppy) but simple code, unusable on iOS 26. Oh! And it works just fine on 18 🫠

⚠️ Private API of the day... Cracked the case of Apple's custom share sheet in MobileSlideShow (Photos). UIActivityViewController has a private `setCustomViewController:` method that lets you add a custom view as a header. I combined this with a custom view controller transition for the full Photos effect.

Built a circular slider with a couple of CAShapeLayers, a CAGradientLayer...oh, and _UILiquidLensView! The lens view takes surprisingly little work to get up and running. Truly an incredibly impressive bit of engineering from the UIKit team. You initialise the lens, call setLifted:animated: and then any changes to frame, bounds or center are automatically animated with these beautiful blobby transforms.

Spent some time preparing Duet for iOS 26. Pretty happy with how this interaction turned out! In a shocking turn of events, I ended up using SwiftUI for the two map style buttons because, despite UIButton.Configuration being great, it’s got noting on SUI’s ButtonStyle API.

Been a while, but here's your private API of the day... UIKit's fluid slider, as seen in Apple Music, Podcasts, SpringBoard and more. UISlider has private `_sliderStyle` and `sliderConfiguration` properties. Here, the slider has a style of 110, and the configuration is an instance of the private `_UISliderFluidConfiguration` class.

With a bit of UIKit Jiggery-Pokery™ you can display arbitrary views as the content of a segmented control’s segments. In this case, a _UIHostingView featuring SwiftUI Text with an animated numeric content transition. Although probably doable _with_, no private APIs used here!

Meet _UIContextMenuAccessoryView and UIContextMenuInteractionDelegate_Private's _contextMenuInteraction(_:accessoriesForMenuWithConfiguration:) method. Took some time, but here’s a Tint Colour settings screen for an upcoming app I’m working on 🌈👀 The animation comprises of _actual_ UIKit components, so dark mode, dynamic type, etc. are fully supported. Also, couldn’t resists using the private variableBlur CAFilter! 😁

Convincing confetti effects are pretty hard to come by in iOS apps and, to no one's surprise, Apple does it best... So! I spent some time reverse engineering the private ChatKit framework's CKConfettiEffectView. More QuartzCore SPI here than you can shake a stick at, but CAEmitterBehavior is doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

3D, folding map view built with MKMapView and a few well organised _UIPortalViews... Used CATransformLayer and CATransform3D to create the 3D effect. All animatable with UIKit animation APIs too which is a nice bonus - UIViewPropertyAnimator doing the work here.
