How did Mysore Dasara survive Indira Gandhi’s abolition of the Privy Purse? The last royal Jamboo Savari was in 1969. Then, in 1970, Kannada activists and Mysuru citizens began organising their own Dasara. They borrowed a wooden howdah from the Palace, brought in an elephant and kept the procession alive. In 1975, the State formally took over the Jamboo Savari. Yaduveer Wadiyar tells the story of how a royal tradition became People’s Dasara. Watch:
