During the NNPC recruitment in January, my team at JarusHub (careers) and I shuttled between Lagos, Abuja, Ilorin and PH to coach candidates for NNPC interview, teaching them about oil & gas industry, what to say in interviews etc. At least 100 of them passed and got in.

I said on a Twitter Space recently that the tax authorities do not have the capacity to go after everybody. The tax laws put N25m as quarterly threshold for banks to share reports with them. And N100m for corporate accounts. Now, let’s say each deposit money bank has 5,000 customers whose total inflows in a quarter is N25m and each MFB/neobank has 1,000. There are 23 banks in Nigeria and 1,000 MFBs. (5,000*23)+(1,000*1,000)= 1.1m people per quarter whose bank accounts will feature. Now, imagine the administrative procedure of comparing the tax records of 1.1m people every three months with their bank records and writing to each of them to explain the disparity. And repeat same every three months. For administrative convenience, the only reasonable thing to do is to have an administrative threshold higher than the statutory threshold. In other words, if banks, as the law requires, submit records of 1.1m accounts with N25m+ inflows every quarter, the tax authority may decide to ask questions only from people with N100m+ plus or just do top 50,000 people from the 1.1m people they have on their table. At the end of the day, it still goes back to the central message of this tax reform - the rich are the target. I don’t know why everyone is panicking. No tax authority in the world has the capacity to go after everyone. Imagine spending N1m to get N50,000 from you. Your Opay account is not the target, even if it does transactions of N25m in a quarter. The cost of going after you is more than the amount they will collect from you. The people that will get them tens or hundreds of millions in tax, if found wanting, are the target.

This is an hotel apartment in Abidjan. Note the louvre window, aluminium door, asbestos ceiling, curtain and furniture. By Nigerian standard, how much do you think the rate per night will be in Lagos? The area in Abidjan is Cocody, which is equivalent of Lekki. Factor that in too. Will disclose rate after seeing 10 guesses.

AFCON 2000 final Nigeria vs Cameroon Eto’o was a menace - goal, assist, skills. He was 19 here and was in Real Madrid, though not getting playing time. See how JJ hit that long ranger. Who in SE can do that today? That was what I was talking about during the game vs Rwanda.

c2018, at MMA 1, enroute to Calabar, I saw some young footballers at the departure hall. I engaged one of them. Very respectful. He said they were Flying Eagles players and going for a qualifiers match in Calabar. I asked where he plays. He mentioned a team in Abuja. I asked for his name. He said Akor Adams. I wished him all the best and discharged him. I have followed his career since then. Today, that young man just scored for Sevilla against Barca.
