After seeing what ex-service men and women are going through at the hands of the Nigerian government, ask yourself: “Me that is still serving, is this what I should expect when I leave service?” To those considering joining the military or police, and those being encouraged to enlist, look closely at how some of those who served before you are being treated today. Imagine using serving soldiers and police officers to stop ex-service personnel from protesting over money owed to them. These are people who served the country, risked their lives and made sacrifices for Nigeria. If this is how we treat those who served after they leave service, what message are we sending to those currently wearing the uniform? A country that asks its citizens to sacrifice for it must also be prepared to honour and protect them after their service.
