From Leland Randleman “I saw this large shark swimming through the water at Seaside at 11:26 a.m. An officer came by and said the shark we filmed was at least 15 feet long. They have been following it up and down the beach.” Before you comment, we know “sharks live in the ocean” and “it is their home”. After multiple shark attacks there is heightened interest and I am simply passing along videos and photos without comment. One teenager from Mountain Brook is in critical condition; please consider holding off the snarky comments. Thank you.

The sun is setting over Hurricane Melissa with winds of 175 mph. It turns north and moves over Jamaica tomorrow. Catastrophic, life-threatening flash flooding and numerous landslides are expected through tomorrow. The eyewall’s destructive winds may cause total structural failure, particularly in higher elevations, leading to widespread infrastructural damage, prolonged power and communication outages, and isolated communities.

DUST IN THE WIND: Right now, a massive plume of dry, dusty air is traveling thousands of miles from the Sahara Desert across the Atlantic…. the Saharan Air Layer (SAL). Some of the dust reaches the Gulf Coast region from Florida to Texas. The dust scatters sunlight, creating vibrant orange and red skies and colorful sunsets. The SAL’s dry air and strong winds actually help suppress tropical storms and hurricanes. Another good example of a scud cloud today. Scud clouds (also called fractus) form beneath rain showers or thunderstorms when warm, humid air is drawn upward into the storm. They often appear ragged and can rise rapidly. A scud cloud like this can exhibit some spinning or twisting because of turbulent air or localized wind shear. This rotation is usually shallow, disorganized, and does not indicate a tornado is forming. Remember, motion alone doesn’t make a tornado. Rotation alone doesn’t make a tornado. You need persistent, organized rotation associated with the storm’s updraft before tornado development becomes a concern. Video from Dillyn Chancey

We witnessed the raw power of nature yesterday just south of Seward Alaska! It was incredible to watch this massive glacier calving, sending a huge wave through the water. Absolutely breathtaking to see firsthand. Glacial calving is a natural process where large chunks of ice break off from the edge of a glacier. This typically happens at the “terminus” or snout, where the glacier meets the sea, a lake, or even dry land. When these massive pieces of ice fall into the water, they become icebergs, or in smaller pieces, “growlers” or “bergy bits.” The process is primarily driven by gravity and the movement of the glacier itself. As a glacier flows—acting like a slow-moving river of ice—it experiences immense internal stress. When it reaches a point where it is no longer supported by land or where it extends out over the water, the ice becomes unstable. Cracks called crevasses form in the ice, and when these cracks penetrate deep enough, a section of the ice can no longer hold its own weight and snaps off, crashing down with incredible force. Calving is a dynamic and loud phenomenon that often triggers significant waves. It is a normal part of a glacier’s life cycle, and very common in the warmer summer months.
