VP Shettima, who is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leading Nigeria’s delegation to the global gathering, is accompanied by senior members of the Nigerian delegation, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the UN, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development and other senior officials. The General Debate opened with addresses by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and United States President Donald Trump, as world leaders began outlining their countries’ positions on major global issues. The session brings together Heads of State and Government to deliberate on peace and security, development, climate change, economic cooperation and reform of the international system.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE President Tinubu Mandates VP Shettima To Lead Nigeria’s Delegation To 81st UNGA ** *Governors Fubara, Dauda Lawal, ministers, senior officials join delegation to New York President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York, United States. VP Shettima will lead a high-level delegation comprising Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State; Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State; ministers and other senior government officials. The 81st UNGA General Debate will hold from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” At the General Debate, Senator Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, outlining the country’s position and priorities on major global issues with implications for national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation. The Vice President will also participate in high-level meetings during the UNGA week, including engagements on the Right to Development, climate action and other issues of strategic importance to Nigeria and the African continent. Senator Shettima is also expected to join other world leaders at the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation and participate in a series of bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries, international organisations and development partners on the sidelines of the General Assembly. The engagements will provide Nigeria an opportunity to advance President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy, deepen strategic partnerships and strengthen the country’s voice on reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance and multilateral cooperation. Happening Now: The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima Senator Kashim Shettima, who earlier today departed Abuja, has arrived in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Bola Ahmed Tinubu on a one-day working visit. Senator Shettima, who was received on arrival at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, Ado-Ekiti, by the State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, and other top state officials, is billed to perform the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ekiti Knowledge Zone (EKZ). He will also commission the newly built Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) along Old Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti. The Vice President will further commission the newly constructed 1.2-kilometre Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Flyover at Okeyinmi, Ado-Ekiti, one of the legacy projects of the Oyebanji administration. Today's one-day working visit is the second official visit of Vice President Shettima to the state. The first was in May 2024, when he inaugurated the Omisanjana–Deeper Life–Ajebandele Road and the MSME Clinic in Ado-Ekiti.
