That is why this week we objected to resources being diverted to China and are dismayed that the world’s second-largest economy, and the UN’s second-largest assessed donor, is being prioritized over true developing countries. UN Development must focus on effective delivery where it matters most – at the country level.

Unity is the only path forward. The January 29 agreement between the Syrian government and Syrian Democratic Forces marks a vital step toward a peaceful, sovereign and unified Syria. The U.S. remains steadfast in supporting the successful implementation of this agreement and calls on United Nations Member States to support Syria as it advances SDF integration and stability.

We cannot expect peace as long as Hamas is a ruling force in Gaza that is threatening or attacking Israel. 🇺🇸 will do its part to help forge a new reality in the Middle East alongside Israel and our partners. Instead of echoing false narratives which only embolden Hamas, prolong the war, and hurt civilians in Gaza, we urge the UN to join us in working constructively to deliver aid to civilians that doesn’t benefit Hamas.

The United Nations Security Council must ensure the large investments in UN peace missions are justified by actionable end states. Missions that don’t provide a return on investment must be closed or streamlined. This week, U.S. Mission to the UN Ambassador Tammy Bruce made it clear: Houthi obstructionism has left United Nations_Hudaydah without a purpose, and the UNSC decided the mission will close by March 31.

China is the world’s second largest economy. A country that can fund its own space program and build aircraft carriers should fund its own development. UN Development should be focused on countries that truly depend on it, not Beijing. The UN was formed to support the vulnerable. Should the UN really be focused on “developing” China?
