Today is Trooping the Colour in London. I thought you might like to see this very rare 12-second snippet of the Trooping filmed in colour 118 years ago. I've always had a fascination for early colour film, and this excerpt from 1906 has been on my hard-drive for some years. Today seems like the right day to share it!

Bringing a Victorian child back to life.... Dr Barnardo's opend its first home for orphaned & homelss children in 1870. From their archive comes this photo of 16-year-old James Alex Lindsey who, after his mother's death, found himself penniless on the streets of London in 1887. Barnardos housed & enrolled him in their Youth Labour Workhouse to earn enough money to pay for passage back to his father in Jamaica. I have cleaned & enhanced his portrait, to return a little humanity back into the faded photo. I have then employed some very clever photo animation software to bring the young lad back to life. He seems to be peering out of his Victorian photograph at the strangeness of our modern morld, in a most captivating and affecting way...

Colour films are incredibly rare in the 1920s, which makes this 26-part travelogue of the UK truly exceptional. Filmed in colour in 1924 by Claude Friese-Greene using his father's own bespoke colour film process, it utilised an ingenious camera with red and green spinning filters. The full colour travelogue runs for 180 minutes. The pioneering film tours the UK just 5 years after the end of WWI. In this preview, it visits Aberdeen, Liverpool, Cardiff, Stirling and London amongst others. I've edited this little trailer for you using the jaunty title music from the 'Jeeves & Wooster' TV series. A section of the travelogue (running 64 minutes) is available on a DVD entitled "The Open Road", restored by the BFI. I've pieced together this incredibly rare & precious Edwardian colour movie, filmed 118 years ago at Upton Manor Farm in Southwick, England. This is the Autumn Harvest of 1908, showing rural life in the UK just 7 years after the end of the Victoria Era, when our life and work was considerably less mechanised. This is amongst the earliest British colour films, which was made via Kinemacolour, developed by George Albert Smith in 1906. It employed a spinning 2-colour filter system of red and green filters to replicate "full colour". The separate colour frames line up pretty well, except fo shots of lateral movement, such as the horse's legs where the individual coloured filters become much more apparent. The music I've used is the Largo movement from Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World", which is rather ironic considering the film shows us scenes of the Old World long gone. Watch until the end, which leaves us a charming little love story. Though perhaps she waved her fellow off to War on the Western Front 6 years later... (One of my hobbies is to collect old colour film footage, and if you enjoy this example I might share a few extra videos on my account)

For the impending 80th Anniversary of Victory In Europe Day, I share this fascinating colour film of the VE Day celebrations held in London on 8th May 1945. I have edited it together for you using rare original colour cine footage. It is not colourised. The soundtrack is Irving Berlin's satirical song about Hitler entitled "When That Man Is Dead And Gone", sung by the wonderful Al Bowlly, who tragically never got to see the end of the war, as he was killed a few weeks after recording this song when a Luftwaffe parachute mine exploded outside his London flat.

It has always been a hobby of mine to collect colour film footage from the second world war and all of the film I have used in this video is original colour and not colourised. I've edited this little film for you using soundbites from WWII news broadcasts & speeches to represent the period of the Blitz, which began at 4pm on 7th September 1940 and continued every night until 11th May 1941. The music I chose is "The Lady Caliph" by Ennio Morricone. (Due to the scarcity of colour footage, a couple of shots are merely representative: It may not show the correct type of bombs being dropped, and it might not show the correct type of planes dropping them. I know some military experts will undoubedly point that out to me, but the purpose of the film is to show London’s devastation, rather than the technical specifications of the military hardware used).

Before enhancing photos on Twitter, my feed once focused entirely on London history. But always having an interest in old colour film, I made this edit of colour footage of the Fascists gatherings in the capital in 1939 under Oswald Mosely. It seems relevant to retweet it today. They never did go away.

Capturing the world with early colour technology is very much my thing, but this is something quite special: Views along the Nile in Egypt in 1911 filmed with a very early colour process called Kinemacolor. Amazingly this is genuine colour film from 112 years ago, not colourised!
