Thrown 40 Meters by Speeding BMW: Marina Dies as Questions Turn to Driver and Foster Care Supervision in Romania World Report Sept 4, 2026 ALEXANDRIA, Romania — Marina, a 10-year-old girl critically injured when a BMW struck her on Alexandru Ghica Street, died August 30 after doctors fought for six days to save her life. The violent impact reportedly threw Marina approximately 40 meters. Emergency responders resuscitated and intubated her before she was taken to a hospital in Alexandria. Doctors discovered massive internal bleeding, a ruptured spleen, multiple fractures and severe traumatic brain injuries. Surgeons removed her spleen before a medical helicopter transported her to Marie Curie Emergency Children’s Hospital in Bucharest. Marina remained on mechanical ventilation with extremely limited brain activity. She died at approximately 10:50 p.m. August 30, according to Romanian news reports. Parents Learned About Tragedy From Television Marina had lived with a foster family in Alexandria for approximately two years while maintaining contact with her biological family. Her biological parents, who reportedly have hearing and speech impairments, learned about the tragedy through television coverage. Reports said Marina’s father recognized his daughter in the news footage. Her body was returned to the family home in Drăgănești de Vede in Teleorman County, where relatives, friends and community members could say goodbye. Speed and Supervision Under Investigation The crash occurred during the morning of August 25 as Marina attempted to cross Alexandru Ghica Street after leaving the foster home. Reports said her foster caregiver was waiting in a vehicle across the street when Marina entered the roadway. Investigators are examining the driver’s speed, the movements of a second vehicle and the supervision provided to Marina immediately before the collision. The BMW driver reportedly claimed Marina entered the roadway unexpectedly. Surveillance footage and witness accounts have generated allegations that two vehicles were traveling at high speed and may have been racing. Police had not publicly confirmed the racing allegation. Investigators must determine the BMW’s speed and reconstruct the exact sequence of events. The section of road where Marina was struck reportedly carries a 30-kilometer-per-hour speed limit. Public outrage surrounding her death has spread under the Romanian social-media campaign #CopiiiStatuluiEsuat, translated as Children of the Failed State Marina’s death has left two separate but connected accountability questions: whether the driver was traveling too fast to stop and whether the state-supported foster-care arrangement failed to keep a 10-year-old child safe while crossing the road.
