Why is there a push to close Chicago Public Schools on May 1? According to the Illinois State Board of Education, only 1 in 3 CPS elementary students are proficient in reading and only 1 in 5 are proficient in math. Our kids need more time in the classroom, not less, yet Chicago parents are being asked for their kids to lose another day of school on May 1st for a political Day of Action. Parents and kids rely on schools for learning and consistency. Closing schools will send parents scrambling for babysitters or losing wages to stay home to care for their kids. For some kids, schools are where they get their meals and are the safest place they’ll be that day. As a CPS mom, I have skin in the game and expect my son to be in school where he belongs on May 1st. Keep Chicago’s students in the classroom, parents at work, and focus on the city’s test scores, not its politics. #chicago

Chicago has the second-largest public transit system in the United States. That's not a small feat. 8 train lines. Over 120 bus routes. Millions of Chicagoans moving across this city every single day. A system like that - built right - is a source of pride. It connects workers to jobs, kids to schools, and neighborhoods to opportunity. That's the CTA Chicago deserves. Safe, clean, reliable - a transit system that actually reflects the greatness of this city. #chicago

WATCH: Mayor Brandon Johnson can't name a single other city in America where the head tax (aka job killer tax) is working well - because there are none. Great question by Mary Ann Ahern. The mayor claims his head tax proposal means Chicago is "setting the trend". Unfortunately, it would be a downward trend. One that means greater job losses. Fighting for working people requires job creation. Working people enjoy having jobs to go to. Policies that lead to businesses cutting jobs are inherently harmful to the working class. Policies that lead to job creation are pro-worker. This should not be a complicated policy to understand. Chicago needs less taxes and more growth. The head tax not only hurts businesses for being successful, but it ultimately hurts the workers who depend on those important jobs the most.

This is absurd! Thanks to NBC Chicago & Ald. Raymond Lopez for investigating. An elderly widow is fighting a $233,439.90 water bill for a vacant home after the City installed a meter without her authorization! Even after admitting the meter was faulty, the City is now threatening not only her pension as a former city worker, but also the pensions of her two daughters — both retired Chicago police officers. How many more families are being crushed by this kind of mismanagement? I suspect this isn't a one-off but a bigger problem that needs to be fixed. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN AFFECTED BY FAULTY WATER METER BILLING? If so, share your story in my comments section. I'm listening.

The first rule in stabilizing pensions is to do no harm. To get out of the huge hole, the next rule is to stop digging. The pension sweetener just signed into law breaks both rules. I made my position & concerns regarding unaffordability clear last week. Watch the clip.

All good things must come to an end. This wasn’t an easy decision, but I’m excited for what’s next. It’s been an honor to serve this great state. ❤️ I’m committed to finishing out my term strong and will continue working hard every day for the people I serve.

Dobra Bielinski has run Delightful Pastries in Jefferson Park for decades - what she shares about doing business in Chicago is something small business owners across the city know all too well. "Anytime I have anybody coming from the city, literally my heart stops. What are they gonna fine me for now?" That fear is not an accident. It's the result of a city that treats small businesses like a revenue source instead of a community asset. Dobra's ask is simple. If you're going to implement new rules, ask the people they affect first. Because businesses like hers aren't just businesses - they're jobs, they're community, they're years of showing up. Chicago should be making that easier. Not harder. 📍Delightful Pastries - 5927 W Lawrence Ave, Chicago, IL 60630 #chicago
