Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902) referred to cancer as the “overhealing” wound. Georgi explains why that description isn’t far off. In a wound, glycolysis is useful to renew tissue quickly. But over-reliance on this process for too long is what shuts down the OxPhos apparatus (the ability to use the electron transport chain). Repeated injury leads to cancer.
