Arab militias had been attacking Jewish communities for months, and five Arab armies were preparing to invade. And in this part of the speech Ben-Gurion said to the Arabs: “We appeal in the very midst of the onslaught launched against us now for months, to the Arab inhabitants of the State of Israel to preserve peace and participate in the upbuilding of the State on the basis of full and equal citizenship and due representation in all its institutions.” It was said during the war itself. What this means •Arabs living in the territory were explicitly invited to stay •They were promised full and equal citizenship •Participation in the new state was offered from day one The idea that Arabs were collectively expelled as a founding policy collapses when confronted with Israel’s founding document read aloud, on camera, at the moment of statehood. History is complex. But some claims simply don’t survive the primary source. This clip is one of them.
