Accidents happen, and they can happen in a matter of seconds. Recently, our officers responded after a mom accidentally locked her keys inside her vehicle with her child still inside. She called 911 right away, stayed with her child, and officers safely reunited them within minutes. If this ever happens to you: - Call 911 immediately. - Stay with your child. - Create shade if possible and watch for signs of heat-related illness. A quick call and a calm response can make all the difference

Last night, on May 8, 2026, officers arrested 22 people between the ages of 12 and 21, as part of a teen takeover. The large group of teens attempted a takeover in the area of Curtis Hixon Park, causing significant disruptions, fights, and other issues in the park and surrounding areas. “This type of reckless and criminal behavior will not be tolerated in our city,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “What began as a large gathering quickly escalated into disorder and activity that placed others at risk. Parents need to know where their children are and who they are with...we will continue taking strong enforcement action against anyone who threatens the peace and safety of our community." We are aware of reports circulating online that a Tampa Police Officer was involved in the fatal shooting last night near W Main St and N Albany Ave; however, we can confirm no Tampa Police officers were involved in the shooting, and no officers discharged their firearms during the incident. As friends and family are grieving an unimaginable loss of a loved one, our detectives are working tirelessly to identify and arrest those responsible. Leading up to this shooting, there were dozens of people near the victim, as well as hundreds of others nearby. Recently, our officers rescued two adults whose boat overturned. Fortunately, everyone involved was ok. As Fourth of July weekend quickly approaches, remember captains, the safety of your crew starts with you. Around 7:24 PM on Aug 13, 200+ reckless riders tried to take over our streets. Our eyes in the sky & boots on the ground worked together to track them down. You can try to run and hide. But we’ll be right behind & above – making sure our roadways are safe for everyone.

Takeovers are a community issue, and they require a community response. We are urging parents, to step in. Know where your teens are, know who they’re with, and talk with them about making safe choices this summer. If you see signs of a takeover forming, whether online or in person, don’t ignore it. Report it by calling 813-231-6130. Teens, don't forget to join us this Friday at the NFL YET Center (3310 E Lake Ave) for "Takeover with a Purpose." The fun begins at 8:00 p.m., and ends at midnight.
