A lot of people are misreading Shohei’s grand slam swing. They misread because they don’t know high level. One guy said “front leg, off balance out front”. Don’t let the video interfere with your opinion. 🤦‍♂️ His weight is clearly back at launch. He has very good barrel depth (means he wasn’t on his front leg at launch). You can’t get barrel depth when on a weighted front leg. He’s clearly early. So the launch was deep (rear legged) but the pitch wasn’t there yet. So he demonstrates an adjustability that only comes with HLP…..he LET the arms out to align barrel and ball. Key word: LET His barrel was already up to speed from being launched rearward. You can see it’s completely blurred out when it’s still behind him. But because his arms are not force producers, they are free and able to ‘let out’ the barrel. (He could have pulled them in if the pitch was inside) If the arms were force producers the launch would have been forward, not rearward. There would be no deep rearward barrel blur. And the arms would have been ‘spent’ at launch. They’d have no ability to do anything else. He would have made a commitment at launch to a spot, he would have ‘spent’ the arms to produce force, and that would not allow him the late arm adjustability that he shows here. Some day people will stop talking out of their ass.

Kudo’s to ex5oclockhitter for coming out to learn more about what I teach. For the last several years I’ve tried to get former mlb’ers to come out and learn. Someone asked for a recap. So here’s a quick take on what we did. After watching some videos, we went to the cage. I used 2lb medicine balls to get him to feel the hand snap. I took a swing to demonstrate. He took several swings. This was one of his last after starting to feel the quickness of the hand snap.

‘Complete’ is a key swing concept. I say “quick and complete” multiple times during lessons. If your pivot slows…..or stops….isn’t instant and complete….the arms will take the barrel forward. Even if snapped. The rear leg must take it forward. Not the arms. No savers allowed. You made a decision. Execute your decision. Fully. Explosively. If your read was right you’ll barrel it. If your read was wrong you won’t. Keep your swing consistent. Quick and complete every time. Trust your read. If your read was wrong, and you chased. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR SWING. Fix your read.

Oh. My. God. #shegone. Torpedo bat swings. 🙂🙂. 32mph from 13’. Reaction time same as 135mph pitch, Judy. 🙂 I’m 70, Judy. Yes it’s only going 32 through the zone Judy. But time from release to home plate is the same as 135. No, Judy, I didn’t have to deal with offspeed. But if someone else was here to alternate full and offspeed it’d be no problem. For me. But you, Judy? I would just love for Judy, the keyboard warrior, to come compete against me. 🙂 He scared. 🙂🙂
