USB C cables all look the same, so how does your computer know the difference between them? Turns out there’s a tiny chip inside most USB C cables that identifies its capabilities. Someone made an open source app that uses that chip to list out the info so you never have to confuse cables again.

You can text someone hundreds of miles away with no cell service, no wifi, and no servers in between. All it takes is a cheap radio board and open source software like Meshtastic. Meshtastic turns the board into a node in an encrypted mesh, capable of receiving and relaying information across vast distances.

Wifi signals can be used to see your body through walls. Using open source software and some cheap hardware, you can measure the disturbances in wifi waves emanating from a router. Those disturbances are measured and converted into body shapes to tell you where someone is in a room.

Your iPhone is also a color calibration tool for your TV. Using the Face ID sensors it reads the light emitting from your TV to figure out how far off the colors are. All you need is an Apple TV box and it’ll correct the HDMI signal in real time regardless of your TV settings.
