Reid Moon, rare book dealer and Library of Congress consultant, says the Book of Mormon is the most requested book at his rare book shop and the most requested book at the Library of Congress. That lines up with decades of serious engagement from non-Latter-day Saint academics. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Daniel Walker Howe (Harvard, Berkeley, Oxford, UCLA) called it “a powerful epic” that “should rank among the great achievements of American literature.” Non-Latter-day Saint professors at Vermont, Chicago, and Harvard have praised its complex narrative, deep intertextuality, and Christ-centered theology, with one scholar teaching an entire university course on the book. The Library of Congress added it to its “Books That Shaped America” list in 2013 and later ranked it fourth on its “America Reads” list of the most influential books in U.S. history. As Harvard-trained sociologist Thomas O’Dea observed, it remains one of the few books that critics feel comfortable dismissing without reading it. Over 200 million copies have been distributed in more than 115 languages. For millions of people around the world, it has been a life-changing book.
