Michael Kay with an interesting scoop that changes this entire story: Jazz didn’t steal to pad his stats. Aaron Boone told him to steal, because it wasn’t a blowout yet. The Yankees were up by 6 runs at the time, and so there was still a chance they’d have to use Bednar in the 9th. Kay: “Jazz walks to start the 8th inning. As he's running down to first base, Boone shuts Jazz down, says he's not allowed to steal. But then Boone sees that the Red Sox infield is playing behind Jazz. So Boone yells to the Red Sox dugout, ‘No no no, you can't have it both ways. You either hold him on and we won't run, or if you're gonna not hold him on, we are gonna run.’ Red Sox manager] Chad Tracy didn't react. So the Red Sox first baseman still plays behind Jazz. So Boone says, Go steal. And Boone's reasoning is this: I am two batters away in the ninth inning from having to bring in David Bednar. That run is important. If you're gonna hold me on, then fine I won't run. But you can't have it both ways. I would not have Jazz steal if they were holding him on. But I am not going to give up on a free run, which might stop me from bringing in Bednar."

“I can’t f—ing believe I didn’t start today, Boone said he wanted to ‘cherry pick’ when he can ‘fire Benny Rice in a big spot’ well buddy you just fired Benny Rice to get a sac fly in the 8th so the Yankees can lose 7-1, I’m leading MLB in OPS, but fine sit me against lefties”

Yankees booth destroys Jazz for this awful ABS challenge: Kay: “Right down the middle. And the crowd mocks him with boos.” Cone: “That’s the beauty of the challenge system, you get humbled. That’s right down the middle.” Kay: “Maybe he was hoping for a computer malfunction.”

Jorge Posada on whether he’d ever coach or manage in MLB: “This is hard, Jeet. The game is at 8:00. I have to be here at 1:30. We leave after everyone. I’ll never say never….It’s just a lot of time on the field, prepping, looking at video, scouting. It takes a lot.”

This is the nail in the coffin for Volpe. This simply cannot happen. No excuse. The Yankees front office likes to talk about his range. But the problem has always been his arm. You cannot fix that. Either he is traded at the deadline, or sent down to AAA for Lombard.

Jazz: *taps his helmet* Suzyn: “Uhhhh.” Ump: “The batter is challenging the called strike.” Suzyn, muttering: “Oh boy.” *3 seconds of silence* Suzyn: *audibly exasperated* Jumbotron shows a strike Suzyn, muttering again: “Well, it’s wrong.” Ump: “The call is a strike. The Yankees have one challenge remaining.” Suzyn: *Changes the topic to Bellinger’s walk in the prior AB.*

Jeter: “You have to clean it up. No excuses. You have to play better.” ARod: “Where is the accountability? If any of us made a mistake [like Jazz] we would be sitting our butt right on the bench.” Absolutely scathing. The Yankees’ sloppy play has to stop.

Cody Bellinger: "I think what people don't realize is Altuve stole an MVP from Judge in 2017. Everyone knows they stole the ring from us….I don't know what human hits a walk-off home run against Aroldis Chapman to send your team to the World Series, and, one, has the thought to say, ‘don't rip my jersey off,' but, two, go into the tunnel, change your shirt, and then come out and do your interview. That makes no sense to me.” The Belli/Judge Revenge Tour starts now.

Joe Girardi gave a much better explanation than Aaron Boone for why the Yankees didn’t pinch hit Grisham for Grichuk: Girardi: “Jazz was going to steal. So you pinch hit for Cabby, to give Grisham a fresh count with runners on 2nd and 3rd.” Boone: “I like righties.”

Aaron Boone on Ben Rice: “He’s solidified himself as one of the really outstanding hitters in the league, no matter what hand you throw with.” So will he still bench him when the Yankees face LHP? “Um, I think he’s a great hitter….I’ll pick my spots where it will make sense.”

In fairness to Charley Steiner, the Boone HR is one of the all time great Yankees calls. But yeah, I do wonder if this is one reason why Suzyn replaced Charley. She had no experience or interest in play by play, so John got to call every inning himself for the next 20 years.

Suzyn Waldman basically saying John and George would be furious at the 2026 Yankees: “Happy birthday, America. It would have been the 96th birthday of George Steinbrenner. And, of course, today is also the birthday of my partner John Sterling, who would have been 88. I like to think that John and George are here somewhere, and they're sitting and watching from overhead, and that they all have plenty to say about this ballgame to each other.”
