White men can't beat Asian men on a level playing field. Not in a fight. Not for a woman. Not on a stage. Not once. Every single time, they have to change the rules instead. Start with the bullet. In the Philippines the US Army emptied .38s into Moro warriors and the men kept coming. Kept swinging. So the Army went back and built a heavier round, because Filipino men would not fall down. The .45 caliber exists because Asian men were too hard to kill. Sit with that. Your great grandfathers were a ballistics problem. Thirty years later their sons were in California cutting lettuce and gutting fish for pennies. No weapons this time. No money, no English, no status. And on Saturday night they put on white linen suits, slicked their hair back, and walked into the taxi dance halls in Watsonville and Stockton and Salinas. Ten cents a dance. They tipped better than the white men in that room. They dressed better than the white men in that room. They danced better than the white men in that room. The white women noticed. Of course they fucking noticed. Some of them married these guys. That's when it stopped being about lettuce. Watch what white California did about it, in order. First the mob. January 1930. Five hundred armed white men in Watsonville, days of it, hunting Filipino farmhands through the streets and dragging them out of bunkhouses. Fermin Tobera, 22 years old, shot dead where he was hiding. Nobody was ever charged. Then the courts. A judge went to the papers warning California there would be forty thousand mixed babies inside ten years. A sitting judge. In print. Doing arithmetic on his own nightmare. Then the law. When a court finally ruled Filipino men could legally marry white women, the legislature rewrote the marriage code and the governor signed it within days. Then Congress. Filipino immigration capped at fifty people a year. Fifty. For a country of millions. Nobody needs a lynch mob and an act of Congress to beat a man he can already out-compete. That is what jealousy looks like once it has institutions. Now watch them do it in your lifetime. Seven Korean guys who don't sing in English started outselling every white act on earth. Fifty thousand women flying across a country to scream at them. So the Grammys invented a brand new category for Asian music. Their own little room, with its own little trophy. BTS said no. They read the offer correctly. Be the biggest act on the planet, carry our ratings, and agree in advance never to touch Album of the Year. Same play. Different century. The .45 was a rule change. The marriage code was a rule change. Fifty visas a year was a rule change. A brand new Grammy category is a rule change. You do not build a second contest for people you can beat in the first one. A hundred years of this and the tactic has never once had to change, because it has never once failed. And you're sitting there with a job and a car and a phone in your hand, telling yourself white girls don't go for Asian guys. They went for us so hard it took a century of violence, legislation and a brand new trophy category to talk you out of it.
