So… The good news is Tyler is still with us. He didn’t eat or drink much overnight but was up and down and fairly bright-eyed this morning. The bad news is he likely won’t overcome his condition barring a miracle. He isn’t stable enough to transport to a clinic and he is in all likelihood past the point of recovery anyway. The vet will be here a bit later to examine him but we are all bracing ourselves for the worst. He wanted to get out of his stall (pushed past as we cleaned it) so he roamed around the front yard for 20 minutes, looked into the living room, stood under a tree for a bit and is now lying down in the cool grass. With small exceptions he can do whatever he wants to today. I just wanted to say that I’m beyond overwhelmed by the support and kindness from everyone throughout this ordeal. Never once did I feel alone and I know Tyler felt it, too. Because of all of you he didn’t die in a grody kill pen, he will head to heaven feeling loved. Like they all deserve. My heart is broken, I know all of yours are too… I will say goodbye for all of you, I promise.

Happy Anniversary, Abner… A year ago when you made your way to safety through our gates — identified initially as a mare but actually a gelding — I had no idea how much you’d change my life. I had no idea how much I’d love you… God, you were in terrible shape. Skin and bones, fungus, rain rot, bald almost everywhere. And that foot, that 28 1/2 degree rotation on that foot (coupled with screws in both ankles) was so scary. More than one person thought the kind thing to do would be to let you go… but I couldn’t do it, I loved you too much and I knew you deserved a chance at life, in my soul I knew you’d fight for your life. And with absolutely no reason, you threw your love and trust into my hands (and heart)… Over the course of the last year, thanks to the help of some wonderful people, you healed. You gained weight, your skin healed and you grew a beautiful coat. You suffered through some very painful farrier visits, but maintained your kindness and dignity through it all. Today you’re sound thanks to him and your foot is in pretty good shape. And you made friends with everyone. Chad, Grady, Gideon, Gracie and especially baby Connie. You showed her so much, especially kindness and patience as she leaned how to be a big horse. But mostly you loved. When you love someone, we know it. I’ve never been around a horse like you in that regard. You won’t let a day go by without telling me, making sure I find the time for a little huggy kissy as I bustle about maintaining this rescue. But mostly you’ve been so much fun. Your big, bold personality and quirkiness is a gift to all of us. Having you here has been a blessing and I thank God every day for you. Abner is named Shack’s Way. Knowing who he is doesn’t make how he ended up any easier. We also don’t know the story so we’d be grateful if everyone reserved judgment while we try to figure it out. He’s safe now. We believe we can provide him a pain-free life and we know we can provide him lots of love. It’s going to be a long and often painful road for him but we will fight for him as long as he’s willing. #rescue #safe #ottb #Thoroughbred #Texas #ForgottenToForever

“A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you’re fast asleep.” ~Cinderella Millie (JC: Mymichellego)… She eats her dinner in this stall every night. It’s not really bedded, she just eats and goes back out… most of the time. Occasionally she comes in for dinner and then lies down for a nap while we finish barn chores. If she feels safe and comfortable enough to lie down, fine by me. I leave her be to rest and after an hour or so she pops up and is ready to go back outside. Millie is the definition of a survivor. In mid-June she was a bag of bones, pulled from a kill pen that she was dumped into right after her baby died. When she arrived here in the middle of the night, she still had a baby bump, a big milk bag and a broken heart. Slowly we have been able to put her back together and she’s finally thriving again. She is personality plus and loaded with love, she knows we saved her and has a super grateful heart. We haven’t received any donations yet today, leaving us with $2,355 left (including feed and Equioxx) to meet our November goal.
