Next time you do your weekly food shop, take a close look at the fresh produce aisle. Everyday staples in your basket—especially fresh avocados, dates, citrus, and herbs sitting on the shelves of major chains like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons—carry a high likelihood of originating from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. It sounds unbelievable that major British supermarkets openly stock produce plundered from occupied land without facing domestic criminal penalties. But occupation is a business, and UK trade policy allows commercial importers to cash in completely scot-free. While Whitehall admits settlements in occupied territory are illegal under international law, buying and selling settlement produce has never been made a crime in UK domestic law. By refusing to pass a statutory import ban, the government has essentially decriminalised this trade in practice. Commercial importers face zero criminal liability, and UK Border Force couldn't seize illegal settlement cargo at British ports even if it wanted to. Instead, produce harvested across illegal settlements in the occupied Jordan Valley is routinely driven across the Green Line into packing plants in 1948-occupied territory, where it is repackaged for UK supermarket shelves disguised as supermarket own-brands. Pressure is now boiling over. Over 140 Labour MPs have demanded a full trade ban ahead of the party conference, as settlement expansion and violent land grabs accelerate across the West Bank. Yet while European allies like Spain have already banned settlement goods and arms sales, Whitehall officials and lobby groups like Labour Friends of Israel continue to resist—arguing that targeted bans risk a wider boycott. In response to state inaction, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign is escalating direct action with an intensified national supermarket boycott, demanding full boycott and institutional pension divestment. The trial of veteran Jewish anti-Zionist writer Tony Greenstein has opened at Kingston Crown Court under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act over online posts from late 2023.
