Here is a portion of Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe’s pregame warm up & receiving routine. I personally loved how the first 8-10 reps, after he put mitt on, he simply “paddled the ball” keeping his mitt open allowing the ball to drop after contact… (Cont.)

Check out this timing pick at 1st base initiated by catcher. We have whole field in front of us so why not. We can see what pitcher can’t so we can help w/ timing. Notice, 1st of all, how Jansen is peaking over watching runner & then how he swipes dirt letting P know “now.”

This is a perfect example of “how a catcher receives a pitch can greatly affect what the umpire sees and what they call it.” A lot of people argue that what we do as catchers doesn’t matter and a strike is a strike due to where it crosses the plate. I’m a firm believer (Cont.)

One of, if not the best time to back pick is on a missed/pulled back bunt. Watch slo-mo closely. Drive up through LT leg, get ball to throwing hand efficiently & get RT foot planted immediately. We discuss picks at every camp. Message me & I’ll show you where I’m going to be.

Few examples of great times to back pick at 1st. 1. After pick of a pitch in dirt, 2. After a missed bunt attempt, 3. Runners at 1st & 2nd & the runner on 1st extended their secondary. Back picks can be life savers for your pitchers and game changers. Look for them often!

Had a young catcher ask me about when to back pick… I say whenever you think you can get them. Look for back picks often, be confident, be aggressive, and let it fly! Confidence comes from reps so be sure to work on them often so when the opportunity arises, you’re ready!

When you combine strength, mobility and good mechanics you get some amazing throws! Watch the slo-mo of these Joe Mack throws closely. The exchange, the arm path, the arm shape, the scap load, the controlled mitt, the blocking of the front side… the list goes on and on! 🔥💪

We dedicate an entire classroom session at my Super Camps to leadership. IMO, most important component to being a leader is communication. There is ALWAYS something to say as a catcher. Here are several examples of how a catcher communicates throughout a game. I have four…
