In September 1965, Ray (and his brothers), Jim, and John entered World Pacific Studios in Los Angeles to record six songs, putting early versions of "Hello, I Love You" and "Moonlight Drive" on tape for the very first time. Photos by Bobby Klein, Nettie Pena, and Paul Ferrara.

As Jim pushes the crowd to its limits, filmmaker Paul Ferrara is forced to seek refuge behind John’s drum riser, shielding himself and his camera. It was a wild show.

On August 31st, 1968, The Doors played two shows at Asbury Park Convention Hall in New Jersey. In this clip, filmmaker Paul Ferrara follows Jim backstage, capturing him as he explores the venue. Local legends Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa Springsteen, and Garry Tallent were all in attendance. #TheDoors

When The Doors learned that Van Morrison’s band THEM would be joining the lineup during their residency at the Whisky a Go Go, they nervously pulled their cover of “Gloria” from the set list. As the week went on and the bands got to know each other, “Gloria” made its way back into the lineup, ending with both bands joining together to perform it on the final night. Some songs just have a way of finding their way back.

In August 1967 The Doors enter the studio to record “Moonlight Drive” for STRANGE DAYS. Long before the studio sessions, this was the song that sparked the band into existence when Jim sang it to Ray on Venice Beach. On this day in 1966, The Doors *unofficially* signed with Elektra Records. From Arthur Lee first taking interest and recommending them to the label, to Jac Holzman initially being unimpressed before changing his mind after seeing them play live a second time, by mid-August the contract was finally presented and the guys brought their lawyer.
