In accordance with Shia tradition, each Ismaili Imam designates his successor during his lifetime. This appointment takes effect immediately following the Imam’s death. The concept of nass evolved in the early decades of Shia Islam, when several people claimed the Imamat for themselves. It was articulated, in particular, by the Imams Muhammad al-Baqir and Ja‘far al-Sadiq (peace be upon them), that the Imam can only be designated by the previous Imam and this is informed by divine support or inspiration. This must be an explicit designation made before witnesses.
