1/× The Panama Canal was not built primarly for trade. It was built by the U.S.A. to be able to move its navy from Pacific to Atlantic vcv in a short period of time. In fact, what determined the size of the locks was not a commercial ship, but a navy one. In those days not many

As one can see, this clip reveals how the passing ship, even though it is moving at a speed under 3kts, pulls the ship at the mooring buoys towards it. At a greater speed it could cause the lines of the moored ship part, leaving the ship dangerously adrift. #shipshydrodynamics

1/× How 52k tons of wheat and yellow corn, make it from Baton Rouge to Hiroshima via the PANAMA Canal. Container ships can't efficiently carry every single type of cargo. When it comes to grains, minerals, and the like, bulkers are the one that best do the work. TOP FORTUNE

1/× The maximum allowable draft in the Panama Canal old locks (Panamax) is 12.04 m. This figure is based on the maximum depth at Pedro Miguel locks. Drafts are read at the upper chamber of Gatun (southbound) and Miraflores upper chamber (northbound). A ship that is "overdraft"

1/× Built in South Korea, 366m x 48.5m container vessel HMM DRIVE awaits pilot at Cocoli mooring station to continue her northbound transit. From a pilot's perspective, my own actually, this ship is the Ferrari of its class, hard to match by ones built in some other places.

1/× Let's take the EVER LUCKY (336m × 42m) from the Pacific anchorage to Balboa dock 17. 13.6m draft, and a considerable area exposed to the wind. The channel access to the dock is the same as the channel access to the Panama Canal. The SEALAND LOS ANGELES is coming down from the

1/× How much difference is there between the old and new locks of the Panama Canal? Let's board the panamax VIVIT ALTAIS (230m x 32m ), a LPG carrier as she transits southbound using both set of locks. Her draft, 12.4m, is the maximun allowable at the old locks, leaving...

1/× On shiphandling. Single screw, right hand fixed propeller ship, performing a 180° turn after heaving up the anchor. Engage the engine on ds/slow astern. The counterclockwise turn of the propeller causes the ship's stern "walk" to port, the bow will inmediately follow...

1/× Container ships have grown in size faster than the facilities to acommodate them. Pilots are handling extremely large ships in comparable tiny spaces. Not much room for errors. If one adds the effect of the elements, (tidal currents, wind, low ukc) things could get wrong.

1/× On my way to board the Neo Panamax container ship ZIM MOUNT BLANC, 366m x 51m, draft 14.8m, as she transits northbound through the murky waters of Gamboa. Built in South Korea in 2023 she is one of the largest to use the canal. This is her 14th transit.
