We’re coming up on a very special Monkees anniversary in September. The Monkees first aired on NBC on September 12, 1966, and 60 years later, I’ll be in Los Angeles on September 12 with Micky Dolenz Celebrates 60 Years of The Monkees. I guess that means I have no excuse for forgetting the date! The next year, the show won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, which was a very nice surprise for a group of people who spent a great deal of time running around, falling over furniture, and trying to look like we knew what was happening. So here’s my question for you: What was your first Monkees memory? The show, the records, a concert, a rerun, a parent’s record collection, or something else entirely? This month in 1966, The Monkees released “Last Train to Clarksville.” Written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, it was our very first single. A few weeks later, The Monkees premiered on television, and suddenly this little train that could was picking up speed very quickly. By November, “Last Train to Clarksville” had made its way all the way to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not a bad way to start, really. I recommend it. There are certain songs that bring an entire room together from the very first note, and “I’m a Believer” is certainly one of them. Every night, I get to look out and see people who first heard it in 1966 singing alongside fans who discovered it decades later. That rush never gets old! This month in 1967, The Monkees released “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” Written by the extraordinary Gerry Goffin and Carole King, the song reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 11 in the U.K. And somehow, it still feels just as much fun to sing all these years later. Can you believe “Last Train to Clarksville” debuted this month in 1966? I sang lead, and by November it hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s amazing how that song launched our career while subtly commenting on the Vietnam War - an effective protest song. #mickydolenz #themonkees

Well, here we go. “Waiting For Day” is out now, and I’m very excited for you to finally hear it. It’s a wonderful song written by Vicki Peterson of The Bangles, and I was lucky enough to record it as a duet with my sister Coco for my new EP, TIMELESS, arriving September 4. To my ears, it has a little bit of everything I love: melody, color, harmony, and a nice swirl of bubblegum psychedelic pop. It feels bright and dreamy in all the right places, and just a little mystery floating around the edges.
