French gendarmes stopped me on Wissant Beach today and demanded my identification. Meanwhile, around 30 migrants were sitting on the beach just metres away. Three of us were asked for ID. None of the migrants appeared to be asked for theirs. Is this complicity? I filmed multiple groups of illegal migrants purchasing around 10–12 life jackets with crisp €50 notes, spending approximately €300 in one transaction. The life jackets were bought from Decathlon in Dunkirk, close to the largest illegal migrant camp in France. I then followed the group back to the camp, where they appeared to be preparing for a future small-boat crossing to the UK. Illegal migrant throws a rock at me in front of French gendarmes, yet no action is taken. He then bends to pick up another rock right in front of the officers. Again, nothing. I have to warn him to back off myself, and still there’s no intervention. Instead, one officer threatens to arrest me if I continue taking photographs, claiming I need a permit to photograph in public in France. That was certainly a new one on me. Most of the group have likely since crossed to the UK. One of the men, however, I unexpectedly encountered again on my most recent trip—which raised even more questions. I came across this filling station just a short distance from the main migrant camp and watched multiple people purchase large fuel tanks before taking them back towards the camp. The following day, those boats would be launched towards the UK. This station appears to stock a significant number of XL fuel containers, which are commonly used for these crossings.
